Sweet potato cuttings needed

Featured Replies

We want to grow sweet patotoes this rainy season.

Can anybody help us to find cuttings.

Thanks

It's a potato, you don't get cuttings as such.

Buy a potato with plenty of eyes on it (this is where the new shoots will come from). Plant small potatoes directly in the soil with the most eyes upwards (large potatoes, cut into 3-4 pieces).

Alternately keep a potato in a warm place and the new shoots with start to grow, plant in same manner but more care is needed by not knocking off the shoots.

Yes, to propagate sweet potatoes simply get the kind you like to eat, bury them in a tray with drainage, cover with sand covering about 1 inch, soak well. Keep warm but not in the sun. Keep wet. In a few weeks you will find many sprouts. Just pull these off on a rainy day and plant into the field. Soak and sit back.

OR you can use cuttings, they grow like vines on the gtound and each node has little roots so if you do find some growing that is also an option, sweet tater leave are edible also.

Sweet potatoes are a totally different beast.[delicious one at that]

You can also, of course, just buy a few sweet potatoes at local market and simply chop into pieces and bury them...they will soon develope into a huge crop.

Propagating Sweet Potatoes

The quickest and easiest way to grow sweet potatoes is to use cuttings. Simply cut a piece of a runner, about a foot (30 cm) in length.

Remove all the leaves except for the tiny leaves at the very tip. Plant the cutting by covering the whole length with soil, only the leaves of the tip should stick out of the ground.

The cuttings will root at every leave node. Not just the leave nodes under the ground will root. A sweet potato also grows roots from every leave node that develops as your cutting grows.

You are welcome, if you saw my post, (#2) I also said you can use the tubers, if you don't know that is the sweet potatoe, the post you quoted and went snarky on was a response to the previous poster saying to use the tuber. and not the vine. got it? ok then.
