Cabinet approves 217 million baht budget to help drought-affected farmers in 21 provinces

BANGKOK, 2 June 2016 (NNT) – Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that the cabinet has approved 217 million baht in funding to help drought-affected farmers in 21 provinces.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives proposed the 217 million baht fund in addition to an over 1.1 billion baht budget which the government previously approved to help the drought-affected farmers in those provinces.

However, two provinces, namely Nan and Petchaboon, will not be entitled to the subsidy though their farmers had also been affected by droughts, he added.

A total of 2,778 affected farmers are currently waiting for the financial assistance in Nan, plus another 11,635 farmers in Petchaboon.

The cabinet also approved measures to help farmers under the policy to support the use of quality rice grains, the policy to adjust rice farming behaviors and the policy to provide loans to farmers for large-sized rice farms.

It appears, that perhaps, the monies will not be going to the average villager with his 20 or so rai of rice fields.

I read that as help to increase the size of farms, and hence efficiency, which fits in with the other parts of the statement.
