WP keep by company

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My company asked to keep WP of all foreigners working in the company.

Is it normal? Are other companies in Thailand to it too?

My understanding is that the WP needs to be available for inspection at the place of work.

Mine is actually in my work bag (I have multiple work sites) but many companies like to keep them in the office safe just in case the employee forgets it and the authorities come a-calling.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Mine is kept in the work safe also, always carry a copy when viviting other companies, but never been asked for it.

Once you acquire the work permit, it is very important to bear in mind these reminders and comply with it so that you will be out of trouble. You have to carry the work permit with or keep it in the office during working hours to show to government officers any time. Anyone who violates this rule will be fined not more than 1,000 baht. You must perform the work stated on the work permit. If you decide to do different work or change locality of working place, this change must be approved.

You should at least have a copy with you.

If you are teaching for a company that sends you out to various locations in the area then you should carry the original with you.

By area means the district the WP is issued in.

The WP is actually yours, not the company's. Don't care what the company says. My WP's were always handed to me at the labour offices and went into my pocket and I gave the company a copy.

Working in one office or school it would be ok to have it held by the school.

Thai companies sometimes want to keep the WP but there is no reason for them to do so. You should keep it.

Mine is in my safe at work. I'm not too bothered if my employer has it as long as I have access to it for opening bank accounts/a phone contract, etc.

The work permit should be in your possession at all times, if your employer needs a copy give him one.

It does not matter if you paid for it or they did, it belongs to you not to your employer.

Being employed for 6 years in Thailand at 7 different locations never have I given them my W.P. or a copy of it, whether they paid for it or not.

Get used to saying no, or get used.

11 years working here and all work permits are kept at the place of work.
