Tourist visa extension and Then getting a new one.

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

A got a tourist visa in Vientiane, after having stayed 3 months (3 visa exemption extensions). The time to ask for a visa extension a then ask for a new onw will come within the next weeks.

1) Is the visa extension a straightforward process with no worries (no matter the previous immigration history (visa exemptions extensiond, etc...)?

2) After the visa extension, i would like to get a second tourist visa. As per my immigration history, do you guys think i can just apply for a new one at the Vientane embassy, and will get it easily, or should i do some tricks to maximize the chances?

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes an extension of stay of a tourist visa entry is straightforward and previous extensions are not taken in to account.

2. If you've only had one SETV separated by 3 visa exempt entries you should have no problem getting another SETV from Vientainne.

If you qualify for a visa then one will be issued. "Tricks" will not help and could very well cause problems

Judging by what you report your visa history to be a second SETV should be issued without any difficulty.

All right, thanks and good to know, guys.

A few more questions:

1) do you still recommend me to choose to Vientiane embassy or the penang consulate would be fine as well ? A bit (very) bored in Vientiane.

2) Actually this time i would like to apply for a double entry tourist visa. Is it just like the SETV or is it more restrictive to get?

Thanks.

There are no "double entry" tourist visas issued anywhere in the world.

If you want a multi-entry tourist visa (METV) , which is valid for 6 months you will have to apply for it in your own country.

Be careful about what words you choose to use.

Your statement could have meant many things !

1. You should have no problem getting a SETV from either. If you go to Penang you can use one of the agents (small fee) and they'll arrange the visa for you.

2. You can only get a SETV.

I just found out that the re-entry permet exists, and that it could be a solution for me.

I fead quite a lot about it, and it seems clear except one little detail:

Is it possible to get a re-entry permit on a SETV extension, or it's only possible to get it for the period covered by the visa?

You can get a re-entry permit for the 30 day extension alone or it and the remainder of the 60 day entry you have after you get the extension.

It's possible but it might not be worth it.

Both. I have done it during the 60 days from a tourist visa that was not extended and also while on a 30 day extension.

A reentry permit keeps your permission of stay active, regardless if it derives from the visa or the extension.

My situation is different since I do not qualify for visa exempt but only paid VOA that gives me 15 days in the airport. Others can come back on visa exempt, but during the current climate I'd be careful not to do too many of those and flag the system.

Unfortunately, I don't have that problem :)

In Bangkok the only immigration office where you can get a re-entry permit is at Chaeng Wattana. Map and info on how to get there is here. http://bangkok.immigration.go.th/en/location1.html

You can also get them at either airport in Bangkok on departure from the country.
