In the shadows: Patong Police Chief dismisses slew of concerns as police volunteers go on strike

PHUKET: The Chief of Patong Police has dismissed a slew of concerns that has prompted Region 8 Police volunteers to go on strike since May 12, including allegations that police were setting up tourists to buy marijuana from a stooge behind the Bangla Police Box then shaking down the tourists for up to B30,000 each to have the charges “forgotten”.

Chris McLaren, leader of the Region 8 Police volunteers, says the “sting” has been going on for years, with no action from the Patong Police.

“For five years the complaints have been consistent. Tourists tell us that they bought marijuana from a man behind the police box at end of Bangla then within three minutes they are ‘arrested’ and taken into the police box for ‘negotiations’,” he explains.

“The deal is consistent, they are told they can pay B20,000 to B30,000 to settle the matter immediately, or they will have to go to the police station where it will cost them at least B80,000 to have the matter dropped.

“There has been no attempt to arrest this man, who is well known to the Patong Police, and no investigation into the reports. There is no excuse for not checking CCTV footage to confirm these reports, so why are these repeated, years-long, consistent allegations going uninvestigated?” he asked.

Patong Police Chief Col Chaiwat Uikum on Tuesday (May 31) admitted that he had heard the allegation, but dismissed it.

Should be easy for the volunteers to set up a "reverse sting" operation.-----------coffee1.gif

No chance - BiB in control no matter the evidence ...

A quiet word with the Army (who are currently 'overseeing' police operations) would help !

The most likely result would be that the fines double as the number of people who want a cut increases.

Given the fact that the guy deals drugs from behind a police box it's highly credible that it is in fact a set up.

But answer me this, who in there right mind would initiate a drug deal in a foreign country behind a police box of all places.

How can a volunteer go on strike? You either give your time free or you don't. So what?

Are they thinking of picketing the police box or something? Clowns.

After 5 years they decide to go "on strike" and withdraw their voluntary pretend police labor - wowee that will really worry the police chief. So none of them new about any corruption in the police when they became volunteers?

More likely see the ending of these wannabee Sweney clowns as the police dispense with their services. That would be a shame for the genuine ones who provide translation services and try to help.

Everyone is a winner here.

The dealer gets his money for the sale.

The cops get a nice earn.

The druggie tourist gets let off, learns a valuable lesson, has a good story to tell back home, doesn't use the drugs he was going to take and is healthier for it and no conviction is recorded.

You'd be surprised.

If they didn't know that they were volunteering to help a corrupt organization, then they are far too naive to be Thai Police volunteers. Also naive to think that the cops would police themselves....

The very fact that they'd 'employ' these volunteer badge mannequins

would speak volumes to the normally adjusted

The message about the consequences of getting involved in drugs in Thailand and other Asian countries even scoring a little bit of weed has been loud and clear for at least 30 years.

Why do they still do it, lets call the cops commission a stupidity tax.

Written comprehension

It was a police 'scam' (or was it being complicent in repetitive crimes) brought to the fore by the P.V. taking the high moral ground over the scum they choose to wallow with

Thereby inviting comment/criticism

So how did a straight forward discourse devolve to extraneous big bikes?

IMHO this is just an example of a bigger problem. The Thai son-in-law of one my friends was suspended from tech school for possession of drugs. The local police were behind both the supply of drugs and the arrest. If they have no problem selling drugs to Thai children why would they care about foreigner. Then again it may explain why the children of the Thai police beat to death a disabled person. Must have been the fine example set by their Thai police parents.

wait a minute... the people 'breaking the law' by buying and possessing illegal drugs are complaining about how they get punished ? I'd like to suggest...

SIMPLY STOP breaking the law ,,, duh ?
