CHA AM:-- A habitually drunk homeless man stole his own bike back from the police station before being arrested for a second time.

The man - of no fixed address known only as Moo - is now in the custody of Bang Pong police in Ratburi, Thairath reported.

The bizarre case began on Friday of last week when Moo was stopped in the Cha Am area for being drunk on his motorcycle. The bike was confiscated by Cha-Am police while Moo slept off his hangover.

But he returned early next morning and cut through a security chain to get his bike back and rode off once again. He was finally nabbed again in neighboring Ratburi province - drunk again.

This time police discovered he had stolen the bike from the Cha-Am station and he was detained.

Yep, no limit to human stupidity. Recently in Oz a man drove to his DUI court appearance while his licence was suspended, in a stolen car. Tried to google it, but apparently its not at all unusual - "drive to court stolen car" has nearly 20 million hits.

If it's his bike is it possible for him to "steal" it?

Technically, no. He was merely repossessing his own property. But it was in the custody of the police because he had committed an offence.

Steal normally refers to theft of another person's property.rolleyes.gif

A few years ago a Taxi driver I knew went to court and was banned for DUI in the morning. The copper who had been on duty in the courtroom walked past the Taxi Rank in the City centre that evening and caught him sitting in his cab waiting for a fare!

Donkeys Years ago I had to study some law as part of a "Professional Education Program". One case we looked at concerned a chap who took his car from a garage when there was a dispute over a repair bill. He was guilty of theft, because the garage had what I believe is called a "lien" on the car.

Maybe the BIB had a lien on this motorbike?

Anyway, there is obviously some legal uncertainty here, none of the guys in the picture are prepared to point at him!

Correct, once the bike was impounded, it is no longer his property until the legal process is sorted.

That's a lot of cops for poor old Moo.

One uniformed and four undercover for a drunken bike thief .

Police rule #1, never miss a photo opportunity.

I feel a bit sorry for him. He is obviously an alcoholic and his life expectancy is probably limited.

Even taking his bike off him permanently probably won't stop him.

Agreed, but at least he may not injure or kill someone else while riding? coffee1.gif
