SUPHANBURI: -- A road in the Suphanburi countryside has been ordered closed after a section dropped two metres.

The long lasting drought was blamed for the collapse reported Daily News.

Song Pee Nong district chief Wisit Ananworapanya said that a 300 metre stretch of route 3054 had collapsed. He ordered it closed until repairs are carried out as it was a danger zone.

Drivers will be able to use the opposite lane of the Klong Praya Banleu road temporarily. He said that drought had caused instability under the road.

"Drivers will be able to use the opposite lane of the Klong Praya Banleu road temporarily. "

What could possibly go wrong with that plan?

Every road in Thailand is a Danger Zone and it's got nothing to do with subsidence,

have a look at the sub structure of the road, where are the layers of road base, packing, reinforcing etc, they have simply leveled the dirt then added a layer of crushed rock then the bitumen. Maybe if they actually ensured that the full amount of money allowed for the building of roads was used and the full specifications were adhered to this wouldnt happen, unfortunately with the bidding/graft from the top down so that everyone gets their cut still ongoing here we will never see roads etc that are built to the full specs. Yesterday I drove on a road that was only re surfaced a month ago and it has already started to subside in some sections, the rest of it is all up and down/uneven as they have not leveled the surface before the bitumen was applied but then again this is Thailand so we are all aware that everyone involved needs their cut so the specs are all thrown out, this is the only way those involved can ensure a good profit.

Anyone know over what timescale these collapses happen over, minutes, hours.....?

Is there a hotline to call if we think a road is about to collapse?

The same number to report bribes is probably a good start.

Just put up some dark red tape, and a couple cones~no worries

I had a conversation with a Thai schoolteacher a while back. I explained to him that for every 100 baht of taxes spent on new building new roads and maintaining existing roads, Thais actually got 60 baht's worth new road and 40 baht's worth of Pooyay Baan's or Nai Amphur's new Fortuner.

His answer? Whats a maintaining?

True story. Sad but true.

I have met 3 Thai school teachers who weren't fluent in English, including one who taught it. Or perhaps you were speaking Thai, and used the wrong word, or pronounced it badly. Either way, there is no logical reason to accept the conclusion you suggest.

I think we can just presume they all are....

I don't much care if you accept it or not.

All clear now?

This is an interesting variation on the conjecture that "rain" is to blame for just about every accident or misfortune in Thailand.

This time it was "no rain" that caused the road to disappear. Nothing at all to do with poor road construction.
