Bangkokians told to brace for more sufferings from traffic nightmares



BANGKOK: -- Bangkok’s motorists and public transport commuters were warned to brace themselves for traffic nightmares at the end of this year when construction of three electric train projects are scheduled to take off.

The warning was issued by Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit at a panel discussion on “Investment Opportunities in the Decade of Infrastructure Projects” on Wednesday.

The minister said that biddings for the three projects – Pink Line from Kae Rai to Min Buri, Yellow Line from Lat Phrao to Samrong and Orange Line from the National Cultural Centre to Min Buri – will start this month and construction is expected to commence at the end of the year.

He said that the construction work would definitely affect traffic flow and exacerbate traffic congestion because some of the roads where construction takes place will have to be closed.

The roads to be affected include Lat Phrao, Srinagarind, Samrong, Chaeng Wattana, Ram-inthra, Rama IX and Ramkhamhaeng.

Traffic is awful anyway. With construction of each of these lines likely taking a good seven years from start to opening, imagine how long it would take if they did one line at a time. I say get on with it all ASAP - take the pain now so at least we get to see the benefits within our lifetimes.

It is just your usual no thinking ahead or forward planning and then realising that it is a mess and mass panic. Hence 3 major constructions to the roads all at once. You would expect people to learn from the mistakes but not here. Literally the same again and again.

By the time these 3 will be finished, late for sure, there will be more traffic. So it goes round and round.

That is typical of the majority of Thai motorists and motor cyclists, they have a very low mentality.

They will pull out in front of you causing you to brake or change direction to save two or three seconds, but don't seem to mind waiting an hour or two in these traffic jams.

If Chaeng Wattana is going to close this surely will affect access to Immigration. What is going to be provided to enable us to make those wonderful 90 day reports? Please do not say the online report as I have never found that to work not even once.

My thoughts exactly. Wish they'd start the light rail route on Phuket NOW in tandem with the Chalong underpass. May get to enjoy the benefits of both before I'm carted off to the wat.

Chaeng Wattana Rd will be closed? So does that mean we don't need to go to immigration until the train lines are finished?

WHOA!!!.......Gotta remember this is Thailand and not a whole hell of a lot make sense here. Never has and never will when it comes to construction projects......

Not that I think it is reasonable to expect the police to resolve traffic congestion...

Pol Gen Chakthip said he had instructed Pol Lt Gen Sanit to reduce congestion by 40-50 per cent by February because of the many complaints from the public.

Whatever happened to the deal of the Bangkok police chief who was assigned to reduce traffic in 6 months? That was a year ago right? I thought that was a direct order from the big boss.....
