PM worried with online gambling during Euro 2016 soccer tournament

image-wpcf_693x413.png

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha is concerned with online soccer betting during the EUFA Euro 2016 soccer tournament during June 10-July 10 and has instructed authorities concerned to take legal actions against the gamblers as well as gambling operators.

Government spokesman Maj-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Saturday that the prime minister was fully aware that cracking down on the gamblers amounted to solving soccer gambling problem at the end of the cause but the measure was necessary to deal with the bad habit.

The prime minister, said the spokesman, was particularly concerned with Thai youths being tempted into gambling during the popular soccer tournament which might impact on their studies and health.

The prime minister also took note of the importance of the role of parents in educating their children to distance themselves from gambling and also the role of the media in reporting on the negative effects of gambling on consistent basis.

Isn't he getting a cut.

Legal or not you will not stop people enjoying having a punt simple as that.

With such an obvious love of gambling in Thailand i have to ask why don't they legalise it and start making some profit.

With the advent of widespread Internet access it's going to be a non starter trying to clamp down on it.

So gambling is a bad habit. Presumably except where gambling on lotteries which is OK. How can children to distance themselves from gambling when many see their parents scrambling to buy lottery tickets or even selling them.

Seems it is OK for the government to administer lottery gambling by printing and selling the tickets. They have no guilt about taking a generous cut of the action which it is claimed to be about 60% . That would be a nice little earner for the government and all legal of course and with PM Prayut's blessing.

Hypocrites of the highest order.

Farcical man with an even more farcical attitude. Yes gambling can be a seriously damaging pastime for those unable to control themselves, but surely a system of legalization wherein the state can legitimately make a ton of extra revenue from it, and a separate system wherein those suffering from it are able to access help in an open system if required.

The current system is a medieval approach and is purely putting large amounts of money that would otherwise go to state coffers into the hands of crooks who are connected enough to stay off the radar (through the tea money route). Another laughable moral crusade from a man who is seemingly bereft of any himself

I've been saying for years. Legalise it.

Build casinos theme parks in the major tourist centres . If they go by the figures of 25 million plus visitors a year it's a win win with the tax revenue it raises not to mention the spin to the tourist industry.

As for the wowsers well it's human nature to have a bet and if Thailand got its act together then this repeat headline year after year wouldn't happen.

I think there are more important things to be concerned about

You're also allowed to gamble on horse racing

You would think he's got a few bigger things to worry about. Like 68,000,000 citizens needing better govt and wise leadership.

On Friday we had the police knock on our door, here in the back blocks of Isaan and home of the backyard "lucky number" sellers, to warn the horrible Farang not to gamble on the Football. Ya gotta wunda where their priorities lie?

I've told you before, don't ask difficult questions - it only confuses people...

How many people are getting killed gambling? How many people are getting killed riding in public vans and speed boats?

I think there are more important things to be concerned about

Your not referring to the the second highest, if not the highest road kill in the world, the poverty in many areas of Thailand, the shootings, the rape and mistreatment of young children, corruption and bribery, inefficient policing, a rule of law that only applies to the under-privileged - - - it not these insignificant things you are referring to, is it?

Prayut is only concerned the money will be leaving Thailand un Taxed, wake up and join the 21st century.

Do you mean the things that never seem to get Prime Ministerial attention ?

An example would be how a certain monk is running rings around the DSI etc as he and his followers openly flout the law.

Even Though I gave a like , you will find most western governments are hypocrites as well, when it comes to a bet each way.

Oooh.... that's tempting. :)

The nanny state attitude rears its ugly head again. You cant do this as it is bad. What about all the other bad things that are more important?

This discussion is about illegal gambling in Thailand.

Feel free to start a new thread regarding the legalities of drugs in the Kingdom.

Thanks.

Is there nothing the benevolent one won’t meddle in?

As noted by Lingba, Artisi, Caveat Emptor, and amdy2206 above, this should not distract junta-head from more pressing issues facing the country.

Not his business. The simmering resentment against the military is palpable. When the word army is mentioned it is always with a frown. When the inevitable significant incident happens in the near future and there wil be mass restlessness it will be interesting how many army regiments are loyal to the people or prepared to kill them. Gradually the life is being squeezed out of Thailand and the Thai people. The people of Issan are basically under occupation by hostile military forces.

I thought this thread was about the dictates of an unelected regime and one person in particular - not just gambling.
