Kabula
I want to by a Dell computer and MS licensed Office software from the U.S. for gifts here. I was wondering if I will be charged duty as it is a gift. My professional forwarding service in the U.S. allows for the option to mark the packaging as a gift. If not accepted, what sum can I expect to be charged for duty on a retail price of $900.00. My forwarding service is in a state that has no state sales tax. Where is the customs office in Bangkok? What is the procedure. In 9 years living here after receiving hundreds of packages I was never charged duty. I'm not sure why, perhaps the professional shipper has connections? I've heard they do target computers. I look forward to your responses.

robblok
Gift .... that wont work.. you have to pay import anyway. If it was so easy everyone would use that loophole.

blackcab
Why not buy office from Microsoft online store. You can pay and download it. This is the digital age after all. No need to ship a disc around the world.
BuaBS
If you really want to buy it in the US, put the computer in your carry-on , the empty box (fill it with clothes or other stuff) in your checked luggage. In the off chance they stop you , you say it's your personal computer. Voila , no import tax.

I did that a few times with mine and nobody even looked inside my bag.

DogNo1
You can buy Office 365 most cheaply from the Microsoft online store in Thailand. You can buy an English version directly from them.
Lannig
I think laptops are duty free.... Certainly not if they're shipped over. As hand-carried luggage, if one removes obvious signs of its being brand new (protection films etc.), yes.

I've used Fedex to ship in brand new boxed laptops and there's no duty, just 7% tax on your declared cost which can be anything you think is reasonable.
