Euro2016 – Marseille prosecutor blames “Russians, trained to fight”

"There were 150 Russian supporters who, in reality, were hooligans"

MARSEILLE: -- The chief prosecutor in the French city of Marseille says Russians trained to fight were involved in the worst of the fan violence that erupted in Marseille at the start of the Euro 2016 football tournament on Saturday.

“There were about 150 supporters of Russian nationality who in reality are hooligans, who are used to this kind of behaviour and train for it,” Brice Robin told reporters at a press conference in the Mediterranean city.

“Some of them arrived at Marignane Airport and were refused entry. Unfortunately, it seems others arrived by different means of transport and they were prepared for ultra-rapid and ultra-violent actions,” he added.

In numbers
35 people injured (mostly English)
Four in serious condition
Three days of fighting
English, French and Russian fans involved
6 Britons, 3 French, 1 Austrian in custody
All charged with violence involving a weapon
116 arrests since Friday
63 kept in custody
Three expelled from France
Five refused entry to France

Court appearances
Ten people are due in court in Marseille.

The six British nationals, three French and one Austrian face charges of violence with a weapon.

Asked why no Russian nationals face a court hearing, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said the speed the attacks were carried out has made arrests difficult.

“These are highly-trained people”, he said, adding that closed-circuit television is being studied

UEFA “disgusted”
UEFA, the governing body of European football, says it is “disgusted” by the scuffles inside and outside the Velodrome stadium in Marseille.

It has threatened to throw England and Russia out of the championship if the violence continues.

The issue of alcohol
The violence at the weekend has re-ignited the debate about the excessive consumption of alcohol by football fans.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says the sale, consumption and possession of alcohol will not be allowed on match days and the day before in the fan zone areas of places concerned.

On Monday morning, the Rhone regional authority said it would forbid the sale of off-license alcohol to supporters on match days.

Lyon is one of the ten host cities for the tournament.

Belgium are due to play Italy in the city’s new state-of-the-art stadium on Monday evening.

What happened?
There were tense scenes in the centre of Marseille, particularly around the Old Port, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police tried to disperse crowds of football fans.

The violence began when England and Russia fans met in the narrow streets around the Old Port, throwing bottles and chairs and clashing with French riot police.

Tear gas and water cannon were used to restore order in the city in the hours leading up to the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

What they are saying
“There were 150 Russian supporters who, in reality, were hooligans. These people were well-prepared for ultra-rapid, ultra-violent action,” – Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin

“The sale, the consumption and the possession of alcoholic drinks is forbidden on match days, the day before and within the perimeter of the fan zones concerned,” – said French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

Darwin's theory of natural selection.

Rock Apes getting drunk, then beating each other up, causing a riot, while waiting to get into a soccer game.

Must be a very boring, misunderstood game, if the fans feel compelled to kill each other, even before they even get in the stadium.

This is what adults with the mental maturity of 8 year old's do.

^^^ These people are not fans and have no interest in football. While the English were goaded by French and Russian 'supporters' and some gave as good as they got, bearing in mind there are tens of thousands of peaceful English fans that are there to enjoy themselves and the footy. Also, security was a joke and French police were very heavy-handed and exacerbated things.

The first reports several days ago of trouble with Engish fans was because they were singing too loudly so the police confronted them - that was a stupid move by the French police, when people generally don't think they are doing anything wrong and police decided they were all it does is create confrontation, French police failed to deal with this properly.

This Russian violence is an entirely different thing altogether, a well organised and trained group of over 150 thugs intent on nothing else but violence, funny how none of them have been detained, it wouldn't surprise me if they were sent by Russian authorities to cause trouble, just wait until Russia and Slovakia play on Wed, that will be a real interesting one, I suggest that the French mobilise some troops for that one

So those pesky Russki's kicked the arse's of some Brit.'s.......and this is only football......if there is a wider conflict i.e.war, they will do more than that, if the braindead honchos at NATO decide to invade Russia, expect a lot more Russian violence.

Europeans should consider shifting their interest to the NFL. In America, almost all the violence is on the field, not in the stands or outside the stadiums.

Why?

We continue to play the game that NFL was derived from. It doesn't stop every minute, or two like NFL and the fans are not known for their violent tendencies....

It's called Rugby.

No need; we've already got a version of that for men who don't need to wear loads of pads! And all the fans drink together and have a laugh... :-)

No, their fans are known for running around the streets drunk & naked. Still better than fighting though.

Yeah. And in American riots, there's a chance of scoring a big screen TV.

In fact, they don't usually even make the news until someone breaks a window and starts carting off some plunder.

Hyped up bullies. Remember the Russian military, with all their supposed wonderful weapons and super duper special forces getting their <deleted> kicked in Afghanistan?

They are willing to throw, and sacrifice manpower (and women) and see nothing wrong with "cannon fodder". Saddam's guard found out just how good Russian tanks were.

Here we have a large group of violent thugs, intent on violence, prepared and organized for it, as Russian fans often are, attacking England supporters who were in the majority there to watch the match.

Russian armed forces got their <deleted> kicked by the Japanese early last century, then by the Germans and wouldn't have turned that round without substantial help from the Allies and willingness to sacrifice millions of their own, and then by the Mjua'hadeen, Like all bullies, they're great at dishing it out but don't like it when someone fights back.

Putin is a typical bully boy and happy to dish it out but whines like a piglet when on the receiving end. History shows you can't trust Russia and NATO needs, and will, beef up again.

Russian government tells hooligans they are proud of them and to carry on as normal

I don't see anything terrible about fans fighting. Quite the opposite, the guys did well. Keep it up!"

Member of parliament is not a member of government. That was Mr Lebedev's private opinion. It has nothing to do with the government.

Meantime the Russian minister of sport Mr Mutko (a member of government) condemned Russian fans behaviour in France.

Why the hell any fan do this on the first place.

Stupidity... Or maybe bunch of ultras that wanted to fulful their role at least at something.

Really, all this clash thing is very stupid and pointless. What a disgrace, especially when RU have this critical media coverage. Why now?... Who gain anything from this? Nobody but their ego... What the hell...

Maybe they were provoked, maybe they started it, maybe all participants were insulting each other right after the game, but all this wasn't needed at all. I'll never understand this football fans fights. There is no logical/healthy reason to do all this...

P.S. It's Croatian fans on the pic

P.P.S. Watched video on a previous post... Imbeciles...

Why the hell any ultra nationalists act this way... For what... They must be proud of themselves, idiots...

Agree. I read that English fans were provoking Russians during whole game shouting insults towards Putin and Sharapova. Might be it was the reason they got mad and took on English after the game. But I agree this behaviour is total stupidity.

stinking bowl of anti-Russian salad, everything what was in the fridge: Japanese early in the century, Germans, America, Putin, Afghanistan,

Next time you will feel the need to bash some ruskies, don't forget Chinghiz Khan, Napoleon, Finland, Poland, Georgia, Chechnya, drunken bears, balalaika, caviar, Gagarin, sputnik, Kalashnikov, Sharapova. This salad would be nice to wash down with a bottle of STOLICHZHCHNAYA (Stoli...)
