Irrigation Department readies dams for rainy season

BANGKOK, 15 June 2016 (NNT) - The Irrigation Department is accelerating its inspection of dams across the country in preparation for the rainy season.

Director-General of the Irrigation Department Suthep Noipairoj spoke at a seminar on dam safety, saying that his department has conducted maintenance and improvements on dams to be ready for the downpour during the rainy season and to cope with potential natural disasters.

He added that water levels at various reservoirs have improved, with water at the 4 major dams along the Chao Praya River totaling 1.35 billion cubic meters. He expects that by November, water in the country’s 33 dams will increase to levels higher than the previous year.

And at that time any lessons regarding water management or alternative sources like well drilling will be forgotten or abandoned immediately.

I would have to agree.. It seems that when the rains come everyone forgets about the droughts that follow, including their plans for when it happens.

Thai people live for today and worry about tomorrow when it comes. In some respects not a bad way to live but the trouble is tomorrow always seems to sneak up on them unexpectedly.

Short-termism, the way of the Thai.

Short-term memory loss is an ironically chronic issue with water management in LOS. Reservoirs too full - dump out the precious liquid and cry "flood crisis". Reservoirs dried up - blame someone else and cry "drought crisis". Bureaucrats should think about the big picture, not just 6 months or until their job expires. Yeah, I know, TIT ;-)

The guys who should be in charge probably in name only to much politics involved. We need 3 crops this year but only water for two thats ok worry about that later, tomorrow never come
