NLA approves bill to create criminal court to deal exclusively with corruption cases

The National Legislative Assembly unanimously endorsed by 160 votes a bill which seeks to set up Criminal Court for Corruption and Malfeasance Cases.

Under the bill, the existing division in the Criminal Court which deals with corruption and malfeasance cases will be upgraded into Criminal Court and all the corruption cases will fall under the jurisdiction of the new court.

The new Criminal Court will have jurisdiction over the following cases:

criminal cases in which state officials are charged with malfeasance in office or irregularities; criminal cases in which state officials are charged with money laundering, violations of laws regarding bidding and joint venture between private and government sectors; criminal cases in which individuals are charged with giving, receiving or demanding bribes, intimidating, coercing or using influence to force state officials to act or not to act in accordance with the Criminal Code; cases of deliberately refusing to declare assets, falsely declaring assets or covering up assets that should have been declared.

Nothing like Thai fast tracking , the question on everyone's lip and the talk at the front bar , will the cases heard take 15 years or can we rely on a fast track decision ,I know we have had that photo before, those seats in the chamber look pretty empty................................

If they are really serious about trying to curb corruption,this court is going

to be very busy,but they really need to have the cases done and dusted,

in a few weeks or months, NOT years.lets see what happens.

It would be terrific if the court was impartial, above board, had the power to render a final verdict and was above politics. What will the actual court look like and act like, who knows.

If they try every applicable corruption case, it will take so long that the defendants' grandchildren's grandchildren will not be born by the time they get to trial.

Great, that's the easy bit. Trying to find straight judges will take a little longer !

Permanently absent would be an approximation of the attendance of the last PM.

You're right, I am taking the consistant absence of 20-40 legislators too seriously.

Their only constituent is the junta. So long as the NLA has enough attendance for a quorum to provide the facade of a democratic legislature and rubberstamp Prayut's propsed laws, missing legislature votes is irrelevant. But at least for the missing military officers, they will still get their double salaries. So all is not lost personally with their absence.

I couldn't care less how seriously you take it, the way you stated it was wrong, unless you have some proof the SAME legislators are consistently absent. Then, it would be a matter of concern.

How seriously did you take it when the last PM, with a double salary also, consistently failed to attend parliament? You do know that under the Westminster system the PM is an MP elected to lead by his/her peers? And that the the PMs of other far larger democracies attend parliament and are questioned about their policies and performance?

As has been said so many times nothing and no one here is truly independent.

IF any cases do make it to this court there's a chance of acquittals or convictions as suits the needs of the govt of the day.

Look how the swift conviction of the police general was projected as a success in the ' war on corruption ' when in fact it was predicated on something that can't be discussed.
