BANGKOK: Migrant workers who legally enter the country from Myanmar, Laos , Vietnam and Cambodia looking for jobs are now mostly employed in the services and construction sectors.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Department of Employment.

According to the department’s chief Mr Arak Prommanee, most legal migrant workers are currently hired in services and construction sectors.

At present, there are 323,270 migrant workers legally work in the country.

Breakdowns of migrant workers are 155,835 from Myanmar, 33,899 from Laos and 133,536 from Cambodia.

He said these workers have been allowed to work legally in Thailand, thus enabling the government to resolve human trafficking problems effectively.

He cautioned further that employers who failed to legalize their workers will be subject to a fine of 10,000 to 100,000 baht per worker.

Besides, penalty for illegal migrant worker will be a maximum of five years in prison or a fine of 2,000 to 100,000 baht or both.

Good to see that number.

I've seen total migrant worker estimates in the 3 million range, not sure if that covers migrant workers family members, or the stateless?

BTW, someone get that chap a larger lectern.

We're not talking about illegal workers today.

Thailand, would be in big trouble without these workers!

Yep, without these fells no fancy studio apartments for just a million baht anymore...

Yes the illegal ones. What would the ratio be 3 illegals to 1 legal or higher??

It's good to know the world's most uneducated (and unskilled) people are building Thailand's homes, condos, malls, and everything else. What could possibly go wrong?

Just stating the bleeding obvious, but they have to say something.

Nothing..........................cheesy.gif

Does 323,270 + migrant workers convert to 323,270 lazy Thai workers?

Does 323,270 + migrant workers convert to 323,270 lazy Thai workers?

No, but there is a correlation to corruption.

Wow, seems we have about 30% of all the Burmese migrant workers in Thailand on our small island only! Oh, wait, the 155,835 are only the, legal, ones! Sorry, my mistake! LOL

But, erm, what about the ones said to pay 1,000 a month each, ++, to some 'middlemen': are they among the 'legal ones' or are their (kind of an) ID card and the yearly 'stamp' fake and/or unregistered, is this a bad question maybe?

Thailand, would be in big trouble without these workers!

Myanmar is improving and the qualified builders will soon return. Leaving Thais to construct their own bamboo huts.
