Newcomer beats Renzi's candidate in Rome mayoral election
By FRANCES D'EMILIO

ROME (AP) — An anti-establishment female candidate has capitalized on anger over political corruption and deteriorating city services to defeat Premier Matteo Renzi's candidate in Rome's mayoral runoff.

With about 16 percent of ballots counted in Sunday's voting, Virginia Raggi of the 5-Star Movement was leading by a roughly 2-to-1 margin, and her rival, Democrat Roberto Giachetti, who was backed by Renzi, conceded defeat.

Raggi becomes Rome's first woman mayor.

Giachetti said he called Raggi to concede and wish her luck. Dozens of people, including local politicians from the Democrats, right-wing parties and other political forces, have been implicated in corruption probes of city contracts.

In other races, partial returns showed a 5-Star candidate apparently heading to an upset victory over Turin's incumbent mayor, a Democrat, while Renzi's candidate in Milan was clinging to a tight lead.

This is a great News!

Amen time to throw off the shackles of these old albatross establishment candidates and get new blood in there. They surely could not do any worse. I was reading that Romes transportation and garbage systems were a mess. Welcome to the world in general its all a total mess. We only glean these nuggets of information during election campaigns when the smell percolates to the top. Basic services are falling apart world wide. A good example is an article earlier here on Koh Samui
