Military students start campaign to promote public referendum

BANGKOK, 21 June 2016 (NNT) – Military students have begun joining the campaign to promote the public referendum, which is scheduled for August 7.

Spokesman of the Thai Defence Ministry, Maj. Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanit said on Monday that military students have already been sent to various villages and communities to distribute pamphlets and documents, to encourage voters to come out and exercise their rights at the public referendum.

Maj. Gen. Kongcheep said that the participation of military students is in accordance with the Defence Ministry’s policy to let all armed forces give their students the opportunity to perform social services.

Meanwhile, Director of the Election Commission office in Khon Kaen Province, Apinan Chan-uppala said today that preparations for the public referendum are complete and it is hoped that voter turnout in the province will be as high as 80%.

There are currently over 1.4 million eligible voters in Khon Kaen and the EC has allowed voters to register for voting outside their constituencies since May 1.

It is completely dishonorable having students support the Thai Military's self serving political goals.

I doubt that these teenagers are any more interested in politics than they are in soldiering.

The boys are in the cadets because it reduces/removes their liability to be drafted.

The girls are in it because their boyfriends are.

Unless each student is accompanied by a politically trustworthy soldier ( and that means an Officer of Senior NCO) I doubt whether they will do anything anyway when they are deployed.

I hope that University Students will be allowed the same courtesy to express counter arguments as in most other democratic countries, but unfortunately it won't happen whilst the bully is in charge of the playground!

I remember way back in OZ 1968 the boys volunteered to go to Vietnam, both regular and conscripts , wonder how many volunteered for this exercise , two areas of society that have no place in politics, Military and the Church , you need go no further than Thailand for a better example.........................coffee1.gif ..

The Dao dong and other outfits are just biding time, times have changed , what the students don't need is the likes of the UDD, yellow and red shirts jumping on the band wagon , hope this makes sense

Hard to see how people will see these cadets in uniform as anything other than an extension of the government out to pass on the official line which is probably the idea. Not very subtle no matter how it's projected but totally in keeping with the overall picture of how the junta works.
