BANGKOK: -- The Comptroller General's Department has suspended rights for direct payment of 11 state officials and their family members after detecting their fraudulent claims of medical bills.

The suspension of their rights to claim medical bills and to receive medical treatment under the social welfare system has taken effect since May 1 this year.

Two corrupt officials are to face prosecution for the frauds, according to the director-general of the department Mr Manas Jamveha.

He said the CGD has investigated the medical treatment right claims under the direct payment system of state officials and family members and has detected fraudulent claims of 11 state officials and their family members.

The false claims of these cases were similar, he said.

For example, each of them applied for registration of rights for direct payment at five hospitals.

They then went to receive medical treatment of same sickness and almost at the same time at five hospitals.

Sickness they claimed with each hospital to receive medicines were the same such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol in blood.

They also cited travelling upcountry, or no more medicines as main reasons for the claims.

He said investigation showed unusually claim of medical bills by these officials and their family members.

He said medical bills one family claimed was 58,981 baht for medicines in 2013 fiscal year, but in 2014 the claim was as high as 527,893 baht for same sickness.

Investigators now have obtained substantial evidence to prosecute two officials for the fraudulent claims from 11.

The CGD was also notifying those hospitals as damaged parties to file criminal charges against them, in addition to pursue court cases with them.

He said the CDG has earlier filed charges against eight officials for such fraud.

One official was convicted by the court, and another was pending trial.

Four others are at the prosecution process, while two others have died.

He said although there was few cases of such fraudulent claim, but its consequences has affected the entire welfare system of state officials.

This prompted the CGD to take decisive action against corrupt officials so that this would not affect the faithful claims of other good officials, he said.

Tip of the iceberg!

These officials leave no stone unturned , when it comes to expenses

11 suspended rights. 2 prosecuted. 2

2?

Favours were owed to the other 9? That's the usual; reason. Or the other 9 know where some bodies were buried...

W

Patronage and corruption, the most certain things in Thailand.

Greedy Thai officials ! Just cannot help themselves, can they.

"Four others are at the prosecution process, while two others have died."

Two have died? I'd say there's a chance they were genuinely ill then...
