June 27, 201610 yr my home country allowed me to renew my drivers license two or three times while I have been living here in Thailand but will no longer do so until I return in person before April 2019. So now I just have my Thai drivers license. Does anyone have any experience here of dealing with car rental companies in other countries and their reaction when you produce a Thai drivers license? How many of them realise in other countries that the steps to obtaining one here are next to nothing and are you penalised insurance wise?
June 27, 201610 yr As a Ferang with one no Prob,as a Thai it can be as my Wife found. Just keep any old Euro or U.S. Licence from when you took a real test..
June 27, 201610 yr I am heading to Sydney next month and I asked the car hire people on using a Thai drivers license. They told me if it has the photograph and is in English it will be no issue. It may be different places have different rules so its best to check on their website what is accepted. When I last got a new Thai license I told them the passport information had changed, I was informed it will be left same as the old one.
June 27, 201610 yr I visit the UK at least once a year and always hire a car using my Thai licence - never a problem. Last year I went online and arranged car hire in the UK for 3 Thais who were attending a golf tournament, all with Thai licences, again no problems.

June 28, 201610 yr In the UK they probably would if it was a Brit or Westerner with the license as long as you could show them your European license, for a Thai not a chance.

Yes, the temporary (2 year) licence is only valid in Thailand.
December 1, 20178 yr The craziness of Australia Just been on the NSW (Sydney) Motor registry site As I'm not retired yet I still need my Lics. Thought all would be ok BUT ! You can only use the Online Process IF ! * You have not done one before or there are certain criteria to be met * As in my case - People that are 45 yrs & over need to have an eye test within the 6 mths of Renewal date THEREFOR this would make any one over 45 yr old having to go to there home country local office As you could guess I,m a bit peed Just thought I would post this in the hope that I have missed something that others may know more about Thanks all if can contribute from experience or solutions

I can only talk for Qld, but they let you go just under 1 year over/out of date with the right to still renew --when you get there, I did it last time, also as I wasn't sure I went into the Diving centre here (Thailand) and got an international licence ---just 2 photos...never a problem with an international.....
