Hi folks

We'll be down in Samui for a few weeks over Dec and Jan.

Any suggestions for New Year's Eve?

We were thinking of Geko Bar which I've heard is a good night but at 39 I may have to come to terms with the fact that I'm too old for that sort of thing anymore!

Any suggestions welcome. :o

Go to bed early. Too many fireworks going off in all directions. I am afraid large amounts of alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

Maybe I am just a miserable old git. But be careful.

Chaweng beach around the Ark bar area gives a great view of the fireworks up and down the beach, but it will be standing room only by midnight all along chaweng beach.

Have to agree with Lite Beer tho, along the waters edge is a bit of a war zone of near misses and some unfortunate direct hits.

Central always have a good display ,also Family bungalows

Haven't been to the Gekko for a while but I always thought their nights were nicley chilled out compaired to the madness of chaweng

39 too old? Man, you've got a long miserable life ahead of you. That is one of the things I love about this place, age doesn't matter, here you are free to be whoever you want to be. You can party all night if you want and have a 20 year old girlfriend too. To say that you're too old at 39 to enjoy a New Year's Eve party is pitiful.

To each his own I guess.

Oops...I should have made myself clearer.

I'm aware of all that's available in Thailand, the feeling of freedom you get there, etc, having lived in various locations there for some years in the past and indeed I do like to enjoy myself.

I was under the impression that on New Year's Eve at Gekkos it's a rave type party, much the same as I frequented throughout my twenties (lthough after reading a couple of the replies here it may be that I'm mistaken anyway and it's a much more chilled affair there).

The last couple of times I've been to dance clubs in UK, I have felt a little out of place simply because the clientele seemed to be much younger, this is where my 'too old' comment came in. It was meant as slightly tongue in cheek too.

As for having a long miserable life ahead of me, on the contrary, I have a wonderful life. I travel extensively throughout Australia and Asia in my work and have a lovely home and wife to go back to in Brighton on the south coast of England.

Back to the purpose of my original post. I have been to Samui many times over the years but never been there on New Year's Eve, I just wanted to know of any suggestions from people that do/have spent New Year's Eves there.

Chock Dee my friend. :o

Last year Danny Rampling played Gekko in his last ever gig, and if you are an ex- clubbers from the early 90's then you would have had a top evening - wasn't heaving just nicely busy and a very chilled out feel to it. Not sure what these guys havelined up this year, but I would avoid Soi Mango like the plague.

Have a blast my friend whatever you do.

Best wishes

Thanks for that, sounds good.

In the early nineties I was living in Asia and doing the odd club here and there. From 89-90 though living in Watford just north of London did all the big rave parties around the M25 and frequent visitor to Camden clubs. Got out of the habit some years ago but a chilled one on a Samui beach sounds very tempting!

Danny Rampling was a British based House Music DJ and is widely credited as one of the original founders of the UK's rave/club scene. His long career began in the early 1980s playing hip-hop, soul and funk around numerous bars and clubs in London. During a now legendary holiday in Ibiza in 1987, Rampling, along with fellow DJs Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, Jonny Walker and Lisa Loud, attended Amnesia, a then open air nightclub in San Rafael. At the club the group were introduced to the unique eclectic style of DJ Alfredo, playing, among other genres, the new house music that had been exported from the USA. The group also discovered the music's powerful combination with the drug Ecstasy (MDMA). Upon his return to England, Rampling, along with his then wife, Jenni, attempted to recreate the Ibizan experience by promoting what is regarded as the UK's first rave club, Shoom. Shoom ran for 3 years, starting out at a gym in Southwark, London. It launched acid house culture virtually overnight, while simultaneously providing a basis for mass ecstasy use in the UK.

In the following years Rampling continued his career in music as a DJ and producer, remixing many UK and international acts while forming a band, The Millionaire Hippies. In November 1994 he joined the BBC, presenting the "Lovegroove Dance Party" on Radio 1 until March 2002, making it the second longest running dance music show in Radio after Pete Tong's "Essential Selection".

He retired from DJing at the end of 2005 to concentrate on running his restaurant.
