LOEI: -- National park officials yesterday seized 34 big deer from a farm in Dansai district of Loei province and charged the farm owner of having the protected deer specie without permission.

The seizure of the protected deer and the charge of the farm owner Surasak Srinam came after he called the national park authorities with offer to hand over all the deer to them for keeping after fearing of legal action for owning protected wild animals.

He told officials of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plants Conservation (DNP) that he first raised a pair of hog deer which happened to get lost and enter his farm in 2002 for fear that if they let them go, they might be caught and killed.

Since then the pair bred babies and until today the number rose to 34.

As he heard news of raising protected species will put owner to jail, he then contacted local administration officials to hand over all the deer to authorities.

However park officials said even though he handed over the deer to them, he would also face charge as he violated the Animal Protection Act.

All the hog deer would be moved to Phu Kiew, Tawatburi forest reserves, and Khao Kho animal breeding centre for further care.

reckon he ate a few, what ya think ?? lol !!

Bit harsh when he has bred 32 and was going to hand then over to the (DNP) and has had them since 2002 possibly bred more then the authorities Now have to worry about their fate food for the hungry maybe ? A lot of illegal hunting goes on about these here forests !

You would think Thais would know by now to never trust government or police to do the right thing. He should have just opened his gate and left them run off to get killed or just die off. If someone can get 20 years for picking mushrooms I would hate to think what this crime will bring.

Tiger Temple comes to mind

....a big thank you....

...guess he would have to be a crooked crook....then he would face no charges....

...honesty and goodness will get you done in every time.....

The only hog deer in the picture , look exactly like Thais.laugh.png

Hope the wwf or an animal rights group steps in and checks out his story.

if true hats off to him for doing the right thing.

Hog deer.

reckon he ate a few, what ya think ?? lol !!

He should have ate them all or turned them loose. Now he is charged which means jail time and/or hefty bribe. Keep your mouth shut and never admit to anything is often a good policy in Thailand.

Well, he could have just turned them loose on his property, they are very resilient and would have survived.................but they are very tasty as well, there's a restaurant in Phnom Penh right on the river that specializes in Venison, endangered?? I seriously doubt it, 'Protected' maybe, but its like saying Alligators in US Southern States are still endangered and there ar millions of them. Farming these 'endangered' species is the answer to poaching..........farm grow the tame ones and leave the wild ones alone also puts the poachers out of business.whistling.gif

That would be tricky for us as our back fence (put up many years ago is the border between our land and the Mae Wong national park.

It has probably rusted away by now so there is nothing really to stop wild animals from the park from coming on to our land. If deer like that were on the land would we be guilty of having the protected deer without permission?
