ROME: -- Ten women have died as a migrant boat took on water off the coast of Libya, while 107 people have been rescued, according to the Italian coast guard.

The women were found dead on a large rubber boat.

The survivors were plucked from the same vessel as it started to capsize.

The women suffocated under the weight of fellow migrants or drowned in the water.

Of the tens of thousands that have made the perilous crossing across the Mediterranean 2,899 are either dead
or missing in 2106 alone.

As fresh waves of asylum seekers arrive the Italian navy has raised the migrant ship that sank off Sicily last year with an estimated 700-800 people on board.

The vessel went down on April 18, 2015 with hundreds of mainly Africans locked on the lower decks only 28 survived.

The wreck is being kept in a refrigerated unit and transported back to Sicily where forensic teams will begin the grisly and painstaking work of identifying the dead.

So little is being done about this that it's clear that Europe is secretly welcoming these additions to the cheap labour pool - perhaps the eurocrats are even reassured that those who make it, after the Darwinian test of their journey, are the fittest for the purpose.
