BANGKOK: -- Bangkok police got a bonus after they arrested two Taiwanese skimmers Sunday - a pair of their mates arrived with 300,000 to bribe officers and were promptly arrested too.

The skimmers face jail of up to seven years and the bribers could do five, reported Thairath.

Bang Pong Pang police had been on the look out for the gang in the Sathupradit area and approached two men acting suspiciously at an ATM in front of the 7-11 in Soi 15. Lee Jui Seng, 30, was found to be in possession of 29 fake cards and a later search at IT Tower Condominium in Soi 20 turned up a skimmer machine and further evidence. Also arrested was Siew Sin Bin, 29.

Police found a large list of customer data that was being prepared for entry on fake cards to be used in the theft. Both men were taken off to Bang Pong Pang station.

Shortly after two men arrived with 300,000 baht and asked to speak to investigators. Liew Cheng Siew, 34, and Liew Kun Yen, 44, tried to pay them off for the release of their friends but police arrested them too.

Police said that the gang were stealing from both Thai and foreign bank clients and that losses could be in the ten million baht range.

The gang had entered Thailand on tourist visas and had been visiting ATMs many times since.

This story is a bit confusing to me, regarding the bribery attempt.

For endless years, the Thai police are famous for taking bribery

money. So now suddenly you are arrested for doing what the

police have demanded before? Guess they get to keep the

300,000 baht and divide it up.... Is there a Thai word for irony ?

Somehow I doubt it..

The rules have changed a little since the Military took over and there is increased scrutiny on Police activities.

Now you shouldn't offer a bribe, rather you have to wait to be asked by them if you would like to pay a bribe.

Semantics, but it's a changing world.

Such is the bad reputation of the Thai police and Thai authorities in general the criminals

are showing in pairs to bribe the police, thinking that it's a walk in the park thing, they

wouldn't dream of bribing police in Taiwan, but thing nothing to come loaded with cash to

a police station.......

Never occurred to you that the B300,000 will be required as evidence at the court hearing of the bribery charges?

I think EWO means that they divide it up after the court hearing.
