ripstanley
I found this test on the Tax Office website to see if are a resident for taxation purposes while living overseas. Have a look and see if you qualify. http://calculators.ato.gov.au/scripts/axos/axos.asp?CONTEXT=&KBS=residency_leaving.XR4 Link to comment
tifino
ummm, there's a dupe of this thread but anyways, always take care when you initiate the communications with the Tax Office, especially if your affairs are already being, or been done via a 3rd party i.e. a tax advisor/agent. Let the agent deal and communicate all... Link to comment

halloween
183 days of the financial year in Oz makes you a tax resident. You could be gone almost a full year, IF it is the 2nd half of one financial year and the 1st half of the next , but you need 183 days of each FY in country. You DO NOT have to be working, merely resident. Link to comment
louse1953
It has huge tax implications, but they will get theirs when the time comes. Link to comment
dbrenn
How they determine whether you are, or are not, resident for tax purposes is detailed in Taxation Ruling IT 2650. http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.htm?Docid=ITR/IT2650/NAT/ATO/00001 As you'll see, there's a lot more to it than days each year present in Australia .... Bob9
Always get professional advice before taking any course of action regarding tax. There are a LOT more issues than just being in Aust for 183+ days. You can be overseas nearly all year and still be a resident for tax. The main issue is where you live/reside - not where you are holidaying/staying. Link to comment
