Prawit says Chinese submarine is okay

BANGKOK: -- Defense minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan says the Navy's plan to purchase a Chinese submarine is okay and appropriate.

Comment by Gen Prawit, also deputy prime minister in charge of security came after critics questioned the efficiency of the 12 billion baht Chinese submarine and whether the Navy was pressured to buy the Chinese weapon.

Gen Prawit said the Navy’s submarine procurement project has been considered and screened carefully by its scrutiny committee.

He said the project was enlisted in the 2017 national expenditure budget but it still needed to get approval from the cabinet.

He said the Navy had planned to procure a submarine for use for a long time, and had been approved by the majority of all committees scrutinising the project.

He added the Chinese submarine is appropriate both in terms of price and efficiency under the limited budget allocated for Navy which might not afford to buy higher price submarine from other country.

Why the need for a sub....?

"face" ... Army gets their new tanks and things, Navy gets their subs to tie up at the dock and watch them rust away.

You just know everytime Pawn opens his mouth, whatever comes out is not going to be to the advantage of Thailand.

They can recoup some money by charging admission to have photos taken in front of them. Certain senior military ranks will be free but foreigners not permitted because they'll be state secrets just like the aircraft carrier.

No actually most would say this is part of the buyout to keep the other branches of the military in line under the Army. In the past, some of those other groups joined the people and went against the army leaders who hijacked the elected government.

Why not ? The country itself has a long coast line...one suspects Thailand has more coast line than say the UK, but no one questions the need the UK have for subs

Foreigners are permitted on the aircraft carrier, provided they get permission up front, nothing unsual about that given the vessel is still technically in active service...same in almost all navys in the world and even on private and commerical vessels, one cant just rock up and expect to be let on a vessel...well except certain farangs full of self entitlement who believe the natives should roll the red carpet out for them and hang on their every word

Are you implying this is some kind of "bribe" from the Army to the Navy to keep them in line? ;)

And who gets the brown envelopes tho, that's the bigger question ... Army or Navy?

Thailand shouldn't have and doesn't need any subs.

Thailand needs to spending money on more important things like healthcare and education.

If you read my post properly you'd see i was writing about photos being taken not going on board and there's been comments over the years from foreigners stopped from having a photo taken in front of the aircraft carrier but ok for their Thai family.

Stupid decision, would have been better if they bought something else.

This offers long term kickbacks into many future governments.

"Gen Prawit said the Navy’s submarine procurement project has been considered and screened carefully by its scrutiny committee."

I wonder if there is a scrutiny committee to scrutinize the committee. Are there any experts on that committee, Is there a naval engineering specialist? An infrastructure specialist, or anyone else with experience in this matter?...or just a few handpicked rubber stampers to trying to convince the public that this is a good idea. Even the Chinese employed Russian submarine specialists while developing their subs. There is every reason to suspect that this will be just another joke to the international defense community.

The Chinese are the masters of negotiating the best kick-back deals for both parties. I cannot bring myself to believe that would have had anything to do with the decision making process.

I have said it before.........Thai navy has nobody capable of running a sub and there are no trained crew. Presume China will teach them !!

It's not about the sub. If they could get away with buying a paper sub, that would be fine. I would guess it is about the "finders fees" shall we say...

Next up: Contract for dredging waters around Thailand to make sea deep enough for sub.

Quite possible, this is the reason everyone wants to be in the government. That is why they fight and kill over it. As long as its profitable to be in government nothing will ever change.

"He said the Navy had planned to procure a submarine for use for a long"

Is he not aware that Chinese quality is not much better than Thai. 10 years and they will be outdated floating museums and a monument to coup #19.

Just follow the money - who is going to run the shell companies to be set up on both sides through which the deal will pass through

Defense minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan says the Navy's plan to purchase a Chinese submarine is okay

So, which is it?. Is his endorsement about the technical specification of the submarine or that the plan to purchase fills a necessary defence requirement and is transparent?

On reflection one cheap sub may be a reasonable purchase. Though not really an operating choice for shallow thai waters it could be a training platform.

It may be that surface navy need to be made familiar with subs and their capabilities and hands on beats none. I doubt they can afford to buy full motion subarine trainers simulators like Australia did with their Collins Class. I have not been in a sub but I have been in the simulator and it scared s....out of me.
