USA passport and now need a 'notary' to witness a form. Who, where?

Featured Replies

Just got slammed with a legal need for a notary to witness my signature. If i ignore then possible future headaches and maybe big expense. I believe the US Consulate offers a service but there i must pay US$50.

Anyone know an alternative, like a Thailand notary?

If the notarized document is needed for some U.S. entity, I think you're out of luck.

Thai Notaries are not recognised by most western jurisdictions and I'm sure a fee would be ~1500bt for their service anyway. US Consulate best bet IMHO.

Most Thai lawyers, that notarize documents in English, usually include an English statement with the the notary seal stating that they are authorized by Thai law to witness and notarize documents

Mine charged me 1,000 THB in Pattaya to notarize my signature on a sales contract and it was accepted without question in the US

Maybe get you own stamp seal

It works

Make your own decision but I would highly recommend using the US Consulate. That way there will be no questions as to whether or not it is properly notarized. I had a document that needed signing in 6 places by a notary. $50 per signature, not per document. It sucks but that's the way it is.

If the signature guarantee is needed for a document required in the US, it depends on what they consider acceptable.

In the past I've had my signature guaranteed by my bank manager and it was accepted. Not sure if bank managers in Thailand will be open to this, but I've had it done in other countries outside the US and the US parties were OK with it.

On one occasion I found a US lawyer operating in Pattaya who notarized something for me with an Illinois seal. He actually advertised the service in the window of his storefront office. Not really kosher since he shouldn't have used it outside Illinois, but it was accepted.

If the situation is sufficiently important, then you should use the US consulate.

I've always used the US Consulate for such things. Works every time. $50.
