So my wife is taking a job in Thailand that is close impending. We will apply for visas in just a few days. Her employer in Thailand told her to get the non-immigrant "b" visa while myself and our two kids will get the non-immigrant "o" visas. They recommended we apply for "single entry". I am a little concerned as we will live there for two years. Shouldn't it be "multiple entry"? I don't want to have an emergency back home in the US and not be able to re-enter into Thailand should I need to leave a short while. Also, don't these visas only last 90 days? Do we have to keep doing border runs every 90 days? I'm confused. Any advice? I'm sure the answer is already in this forum somewhere but I cannot seem to locate it. THANKS!

A single entry visa is all that is needed.

Your wife will obtain a one year extension of stay based upon working at immigration. Once she has the extension you and your children will be able to apply for one year extensions as her dependents.

After getting the extensions you would need re-entry permits it you want to travel to keep the extension valid when your re-enter the country.

Yes. After 60 days she can apply for a 12 month extension of stay from Immigration.

Her family can then apply for the same extension as her dependants.

Extensions of stay cost 1,900 Baht.

  • A single entry non 'O' visa is what is required and will be valid for 3 months from the date it's issued. It allows you to enter, once, anytime before the 'enter before date' (end of 3 months). On entry you are granted permission to stay for 90 days.

Once your wife has been granted an extension of stay by immigration you and your children can apply for (within the last 30/45 days of your 90 day permit to stay) extensions of stay as her spouse/children. Your extensions will be for the remainder of your wife's permission to stay.

Once you have an extension of stay you would need to buy a re-entry permit for any trips outside Thailand. These can be bought at your local immigration office or the airport. Single entry, 1,000 baht; Multiple entry, 3,800 baht.

Anytime you re-enter the country with a re-entry permit the IO will stamp you back with permission to stay until the expiry date of your extension of stay.
