Britain’s ‘cold and competent’ new PM Theresa May

LONDON: -- Winning the top job was the easy bit. For Britain’s incoming prime minister the big challenge starts tomorrow. Handling the United Kingdom’s divorce from Europe will be top of Theresa May’s in tray.

Though she had supported the Remain campaign she is now firmly focused on respecting the result of the referendum.

“Brexit means Brexit, and we are going to make a success of it. There will be no attempt to remain inside the EU. But we also need a government that delivers serious social reform that makes ours a country that truly works for everyone,” she told a rally of supporters on Monday.

Reassuring words for those of her Conservative colleagues who had supported the leave campaign. But she must now unite the divisions in her party.

And that includes with the three high profile Brexit campaigners all of whom had eyes on number 10. Boris Johnson the former mayor of London, Michael Gove the Justice Minister and Andrea Leadsom. There is no indication if any will be handed a portfolio in her cabinet.

The 59-year-old held various posts in the shadow cabinet between 1999 and 2010 before being handed the post of Home Secretary when David Cameron became prime minister six years ago. She remained in the post longer than any other politician in modern times. She was described as “a fierce manager of her team.”

The daughter of an Anglican vicar with a penchant for stylish footwear she studied at Oxford University where, it’s reported she voiced her ambition to be prime minister.

In 2002 she became the first woman to be elected as chairman of the Conservative Party. The newly appointed chairwoman stunned the party conference with her speech in which she said that some people called the Tories “the nasty party”.

Immigration will be high on the agenda of her government. As Home Secretary she committed herself to trying to reduce net migration to tens of thousands, though she herself did not propose the number.

That has not happened. Net migration stood at 330,000 at the last count.

One Italian media outlet likened Britain’s new prime minister to Germany’s Angela Merkel, “cold, competent and determined”. Those may well be attributes she will need in number 10 but also when she goes to Brussels to deal with EU leaders and start the process which will take the United Kingdom out of Europe.

Yet another Blairite liberal clone. She's not a Conservative at all and has failed dismally in most of what she claimed to support.

Politicians are all the same these days. Aside from, perhaps, Jeremy Corbyn and Nigel Farage, they all have so little in common with their party membership and the people that vote for them.

Good. This is exactly what the UK needs right now. ' Warm and incompetent ' has clearly not been working.

But we also need a government that delivers serious social reform that makes ours a country that truly works for everyone,” she told a rally of supporters on Monday.

That is the nuts and bolts. Get back to basics. When the basics are correct everything else falls into line.

To Paraphrase.

'' Ask not what your Country can do for you, but what YOU can do for your Country ''

You have an opportunity to create great things, use it wisely.

The more I think about it, the more I believe she's the right 'man' for the job. Well liked and respected, a closet Leaver, non-lover of the EU machine, big on controlling immigration, and uncompromising. If anyone will get a proper deal out of the EU and not take any crap, she will.

The absolute last thing we need is the forum swivel-eyed Brexit mob telling us what type of politician we should have leading the country.

What the UK population wants is not to be given any more crap from the government.

We will see.

I'm not sure about that, Dave she has already said she'll keep the ECHR intact the very thing that thwarted her deporting criminals from the UK when she was in Cameron's government, she will probably keep the world aid program going, that Cameron ring fenced and was so proud of, the program that we borrow money to give away, too all and sundry despots around the world, lets hope i'm wrong! but since she was only contender in the race, we're stuck with her, will be interesting to see when she invokes article 50, she says there is no hurry, so now it seems we are neither in the EU nor out of it!

At my advanced age I have heard all this canned bullshit before its blah blah blah good of the people blah blah blah and then bending over backwards for your big business buddies. Nothing changes not even the rhetoric.

Did you notice that there was a recent referendum, in which the swivel eyed Brexit mob outnumbered and outvoted the liberal Blairite luvvies? Having had their swivel-eyed views proven in this ultimate democratic test, surely that gives Brexiteers a mandate to speak their mind in a forum like this one :-)

All 17million can't be swivel- eyed ? I'm not sure party membership is very relevant these days- conservatives only have 100,000 members .

Jeremy only represents the far left members who paid £3 to join the party and have immediate voting rights .

No way does he represent the working class typical Labour voters.

15 minutes is a long time in politics these days, the executive commitee changed the rules yesterday, you have to have been a member for six months and a £25 paid member to vote.

There goes England, women in power think they are god.

Lady Thatcher was pretty close to that level. smile.png

If May is half as good, she will be brilliant.

Of course, the lefty, labourite, socialist, commie lot won't be happy, but who cares?

Its funny how polititians all promise to get immigration down and yet none of the do. This was the major reason people voted to leave the EU. Theresa May has a poor record in the Home Office and has praised sharia law. I dont think she will unite the party or the country.

What an enlightened attitude. ThaiViisa, where it's against the rules to insult entire nations but half the world's population is fair game.

It's also OK to call white people 'farang', but not OK to call black people ........

Give the incompetent bitch a chance I say smile.png you never know.

I can see the UK being split up just like the UK Border Agency back in 2010 / 11 and look at the Passport Office plus hillsborough case and the westminster abuse cover up..

July 13th 2016.

The UK is a fully paid up member of the EU.

No statutory notice has been given by HM Government to the other members that the UK is leaving.

If it had been given there would now be a definite date, less than 2 years away, by which the UK would have to "give back the key".

After that date the UK would no longer be in the EU.

Hope that clears up your "in or out?" uncertainty.

i.e The UK is "in".
