PATTANI: Hundreds of prisoners at Pattani central prison stage a riot late this afternoon, burning their living quarters and assaulting wardens.

The riot which broke out at about 5 p.m. forced the Fourth Army Region commander to send in soldiers to help police and prison wardens to keep peace and order.

Fire engines were also sent in to put the fire but until 5.30 p.m. today the fire could not be put out as the rioting prisoners closed all the gates.

The chief warden of the prison was also injured and was admitted to hospital.

It was still unknown how the riot broke out, but authorities still could not keep the situation under control.

One prisoner killed in a riot at Pattani prison

PATTANI: A prisoner was killed in a riot at a prison in Pattani province Friday afternoon which involved about 100 inmates.

The prisoners hurled missiles at warders and the prison’s warden Mr Kartkong Rattana injuring him on the head. They also set fire to the canteen and other properties, prompting prison officials to call in fire engines to extinguish the fire. Police and military reinforcements were also dispatched to the prison to deal with the rioters.

It was reported that a fierce scuffle broke out among the inmates, resulting in one death whose body was thrown into the fire. The identity of the victim remain unknown.

Representatives of the rioters asked to see the Pattani provincial governor to complain about what they alleged as overly strict rules in the prison. However, the deputy governor, accompanied by the provincial police chief and commander of the Pattani task force, countered that the prisoners must return to their sleeping quarters first before talks.

At press time, most prisoners still refuse to return to their sleeping quarters. They reportedly jeered and shouted abuses at the warders as black smoke was seen emitting from the sleeping quarters.

Officials have yet to move in to quell the rioters.

i am sorry to read some members' comments.

a penal institution is a very challenging environment to work in

for the wardens and to live in. the challenges are further compounded

by intra inmate issues like personal grievances or even gang related action.

a riot will occur when tolerance thresholds have been crossed in terms

of inmate living and recreational space and other factors like meals, visits

and treatment of the inmates.

only a lengthy enquiry will bring to light the causative factors for the riot.

Pattani prison riot leaves three dead, five injured

post-247607-0-40070000-1468653854_thumb.

PATTANI: Security officials and forensic police this morning inspected the Pattani central prison to assess damages caused after a hundred of prisoners went on rampage, burning prison properties, and assaulting authorities trying to negotiate with them.

Three prisoners died and five others including warders, were injured.

The riot which broke out about 5pm yesterday was put under complete control shortly before midnight after anti-riot security personnel entered the prison compound, firing teargas cannisters and rubber bullets to stop the rioting prisoners who tried to burn more properties inside, and throwing rocks and sticks at authorities.

Authorities said three prisoners died in the riot last night, two of them were well-behaved prisoners who were designated to assist prison authorities in the prison. Two of them died in the fire, while another died at Pattani hospital.

One was reported to be beaten to death and his body torched by the rioters.

Prison trucks were seen last night left the prison with the hardcore rioters to be detained at other nearby prison in Songkhla province.

Security authorities classified some 100 rioters described as hardcore into prison trucks for separate detention.

The anti-riot police and soldiers moved into the prison ground about 9pm as fire from inside the living quarters still raging.

Shortly later sounds of gunshots and explosions were heard.

It took slightly over an hour before the riot was subdued, and fire was put under control by fire engines dozing water from behind the prison wall.

Security authorities said gunshots were fired but they were rubber bullets.

Pattani central prison houses about 1,800 prisoners, mostly convicted of drug charges. Some were also convicted of security threat charges.

Authorities said the riot was started by only a handful of hardcore prisoners who were unhappy with strict searching and suppression of drugs in the prison, and later joined by just a hundred others.

This handful prisoners were said to be convicted of security charges.

They were demanding the transfer of three warders who included the prison commander, relaxation of some visit rules, no punishment of prisoners in the riot, allowing phone communications, and allowing television views.

They demanded to negotiate with only the Pattani governor.

However when they were told that the governor was not available for talk as he was not in the province, they were angry and went rampaging.

They held some warders and the two prisoner acting as assistants of the warders hostage.

This morning a hundred of family members arrived at the prison with request to visit their relatives.

However they were not allowed to visit as authorities were still examining the riot scene to assess the damage and find evidence.

A lot of TV members do not believe these places exist.

They think every criminal gets a small fine and walk away free.

they even might think only honest people are sent to prison while the criminals .. (see above)

i know for a fact that many people who are supposed to get deported are actually SOLD to for profit prisons. SOme even get sold again. This information leak has a source directly From BKK immigration. Ignore the paperwork data and the CASH ONLY money trail is there.

Most of the prisoners are there for drugs... just like in the US, this policy is a failure and destroys society more than the drugs themselves.

Well kudos to the Thai authorities if they subdued this with tear gas and rubber bullets, seems like they did, given the low level of casualties, two of whom were trustees, killed by the other prisoners. Sounds like a revolt organised by drug barons to me, but who knows.

I support the prisoners. When you deny even basic dignity to men and women, you usually get what you deserve. Humane prisons are long overdue in Thailand and many other countries. Public opinion can now sway government to action. The choice is clear...If you want peace....work for justice......REAL justice.
