Banglamung District and military meet to discus relief plans during the Rainy Season.

PATTAYA: The Deputy Commander of the 14th Military Circle, Col. Yuthichai Tiernthong, has been in town.

The reason for the visit was to address the problems of natural disasters, particularly flooding, in Pattaya and to coordinate various agencies and organisations.

At a meeting attended by local authorities, Royal Thai Navy, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department and private organizations with the District Chief Chakorn Kanjawattana.

Chakorn said last year’s tropical depression Vamco had a devastating impact on tourism and the main problem was that the drainage system couldn’t handle the large amount of waters. He said the issue must be looked into.

Acting Pattaya Mayor Chanapong Sriviset noted drainage tunnels were too small and the city’s wastewater-treatment plants can handle only 65,000 cu. meters of water a day, about 15,000 cu. meters less than needed.

Sawoksima Annantayakorn, head of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said Pattaya was hit badly by storms three times. Many properties were damaged and lower-lying locations were under water. However, the department has already outlined three strategies.

The first plan is to direct most floodwater along the railway road into canals, preventing it from rushing into town. Second is to locate seven pumps in heavily flooded areas, and finally allocate more money to buy more pumps.

"The reason for the visit was to address the problems of natural disasters, particularly fooding."

The reason Pattaya floods is due to a "man made disaster" as in the lack of urban planning (as in non), inefficient sewerage/drainage system (which doubles as a waste disposal system) and an abject lack of forward planning and maintenance.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it rains every year and every year just before the rains are due they have the same old meeting.

Direct the floods along the rodfai, eh? That while it's the main bypass road now that Sukhumvit is in it's century long 'let's dig a hole and leave it there' project. Clever thinking, jingjing.

It was reported, that some Farangs have started to clean up the beaches etc. (The Thai's won't do it, so somebody else has to do it). I can already see it:

- Hordes of Farangs crawling thru underground sewage pipes in order to recover a zillion of 7-eleven plastic bags that are clogging the pipes. Again, if the Thai's won't do it, somebody else has to do it........

Cheers.

looks like the army has taken the right steps.

pre emptive action may not solve all the problems.some

good will definitely come out of it and if the follow up is genuine

the entire problem will be arrested, albeit it may take long time.
