The Ministry of Interior’s department of immigration temporarily arrested 31 foreign nationals, including one Frenchman, on suspicion of staying in the Kingdom illegally in raids of two businesses in the capital yesterday. “Yesterday we rounded up 31 foreigners. At a wood workshop [in Toul Kork district], we found three illegal Vietnamese migrants, while at a boat repair shop [in Daun Penh district] we found 27 Vietnamese nationals and one Frenchman who did not have passports. We brought them all in for questioning,” said Uk Hai Seila, chief of the department of immigration.

Officials then found that some of the detained persons were in fact in Cambodia illegally, while others were not. “Only after the questioning, the Frenchman showed us his passport. For other Vietnamese nationals, some didn’t have C-class visas, some did not have work permits and some did not have passports. We gave them a deadline to request them.

“If they do not, they will face either fines or deportation according to the law and those without passports will be deported,” Mr. Hai Seila said. He added that since the creation of the department of immigration, 10,351 people belonging to 68 nationalities have been deported from the Kingdom. The majority of deported persons, 8,925, have been Vietnamese.
