Laughing Gravy
Its all more expensive but then again I suspect many countries are the same. More expensive than before. There are lots and lots of threads on here about what's cheap and what isn't. Why things are expensive. My advice is, if you think it is going to be out of your budget range, try somewhere else. A win, win for everyone. Edited July 25, 2016 by Laughing Gravy
lovelomsak
Thailand is cheap for many things. The problem for me is food. Not the price as much as simply cannot access the grade of food I am used too.I was brought up on Alberta beef. Nothing here comes close. The beef i get here from AUS or NZ is tough tasteless or has liver like taste. Butter here taste's like margarine. Cannot find decent cottage cheese, finding a decent whole grain bread is all but impossible etc etc. Cannot cook food I like if ingredients are substandard. So I gave up eat Thai. Which is cheap. KittenKong
Yes, many things in Thailand are very expensive when compared with prices in other countries and this includes things that are made here. I suspect that one major reason is that the Baht is overvalued. Reduce the value of the Baht by 30% and many prices here would become much more sensible. Other reasons are probably cartel pricing, lack of competition and massive profiteering. When one takes account of the poor quality of many things here, and the general lack of warranties and consumer protection, the high prices are even more absurd. Daffy D
If you're thinking of continuing your western lifestyle but on the cheap then you are in for a disappointment. To live the cheap life you have to integrate more with the Thai lifestyle.

I've just returned from a UK visit & the same quality of clothing is cheaper in the UK. Meat is cheaper & better quality in UK (great value supermarket steaks in UK, far tastier and cheaper than Thai). Current property rental, can't comment on that as I own my property. But you can't compare different products in Thailand with different countries. Of course you always can find for every product a country which is cheaper. You have to compare all products within the same country! And yes, there are for sure countries which are about the same or cheaper. But overall Thailand is still cheap! My washing machine was way cheaper in Thailand (6,000bht Vs 250gbp) Dairy products, milk is the same price (26bht per liter Vs 1gbp per 4 pints), cheese double, butter you don't need. Cornflakes around the same price (1.75p for 500g Vs 98bht for 500g) Meat...... chicken and pork are way cheaper (chicken breasts 2.50p for 300g Vs 40bht for 400g, pork 4.50p/kg Vs 140bht/Kg) Smoked bacon cheaper here, nearly 1/2 price (300bht for 1.5Kg Makro Vs 2gbp for 300g Tesco UK) Clothing is harder to compare because you can wiggle on quality, but here is an identical product from the same factory in China, Trek lycra cycling shorts and top way cheaper here (40gbp Amazon Vs 620bht Lazada) Don't know when you were last in the UK, but you can check my UK prices with Tesco shopping online. Not really fair to include beef or Lamb in the comparisons as they don't do well in the tropics. I can't tell any quality difference in the pork or chicken I buy in Tesco Lotus Vs Tesco UK.
