EC to allow constitutional debate in main provinces

BANGKOK, 26 July 2016 (NNT) – The Election Commission will be allocating a budget to organize debates in each main provinces before 3 August 2016, says an election commissioner.

Election Commissioner Somchai Srisuttiyakorn has revealed that the EC agrees with the government's proposal to hold a constitutional debate at key provinces, and will be allocating 150,000 baht to each province that are designated to hold debates.

The debate will be held under the regulations that each province can only hold the debate once, and all debates must be concluded no later than 3 August 2016.

Two supporting speakers will be present at each debate venue, which could be either a National Legislative Member or a constitutional promotion volunteer, and while two opposing speakers can be representatives from NGOs or university lecturers.

The money funding these debates are the remaining money from the ballot printing process.

The largest populated provinces outside central Bangkok and Chonburi areas are in the North and North East. So if you talk about main provinces you are at least talking of places like Chiang Mai and Korat and maybe Khon Kaen (Khon Kaen if more than 5 debates are held) as well as Bangkok and Hat Yai.

It will be worth watching if they try to redefine main provinces to something other than something like that.

Since they will not be allowed to debate openly and honesty - they won't really be debates regardless of where they are.

Not much time to organise this or get the 'against' team organised.

The whole thing is a total farce.

I still don't know anybody who has seen the draft charter, and also I don't know, after a recent post, describing the people entitled to vote, who is able to vote.

Instead of fragmenting the points of view (which is something the junta does so well), why not just allocate the entire pool of money to one big national debate where (through the wonders of modern television), everyone can text, sms, or twitter in their questions from the safety of their own homes?

A sort of mass debate if you will - then everyone gets a happy ending!

its all a charade anyway, nothing will change until the change comes, and when that happens all this will probably go out the window. they are just going through the process to fill in time while they wait
