DFT urges Thai entrepreneurs to study Chinese law before expanding to China

BANGKOK, 27 July 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) has told Thai entrepreneurs to study Chinese consumers and Chinese laws thoroughly before making any investment decision.

Speaking at a business seminar, DFT Director-General Duangporn Rodphaya said China remains an interesting investment destination, despite its slowing economy. She also claimed there are market opportunities for all types of products from Thailand.

However, the DFT chief urged Thai entrepreneurs to study relevant Chinese laws, Chinese consumer behavior, and the Chinese government’s business policy well before launching their businesses in the country.

The trade value between Thailand and China during the first five months of this year was recorded at 25 billion US dollars, which is 0.7 percent lower compared to the same period last year.

Despite the decrease, Mrs. Duangporn said nearly 80 percent of Thai exporters benefited from export privileges under the ASEAN-China free trade agreement. Thailand exports predominantly rubber and cassava to China, while importing mobile phones and electricity generators.

That kind of puts a massive damper on things doesn't it?

Damning with faint praise - a big market and interesting investment destination, but study Chinese laws before you invest (do you have a helpful booklet prepared perchance? Or do Thais have to learn legal Chinese and spend a lifetime studying their laws?). Also a handy summary of China's very opaque and fickle business policies might help, instead of telling people to go and find out for themselves - if they ever could.

It appears that Thai business has made some decisions about which (Thai or Chinese) business laws they prefer to operate under and are now voting with their feet. All the government is doing now is trying to discourage them from leaving.

They recently made some big investments in Vietnam and have been looking at Myanmar. Now it's China.

Anywhere other than Thailand it seems. Good luck to them.

with that. i believe all salves should have better relationships with their masters. But dont be surprised if you fail in a rigged game.

im glad Thailand gave the USA the cold shoulder. and now the USA has pulled out investments in thailand and put them in Vietnam. then the business men panicked and started to move business over there. ... heres the catch. thailand has been a huge thorn in vietnams side since ...ever. the same restrictions thailand has put on neighboring countries ...well.. lol. karmas a bitch. thailand has ONLY CHINA and northkorea to look towards. i dont really count burma or cambo since myamar is a WIP. and cambodians. are ... way ass backwards; MSG is a dip. not a garnish or a sprinke....a freaking dipping sauce made of PURE MSG. Thai meat balls are a hiso product.... this one i thought was hilarious. and my fav: westerners in debt there never leave. its funny, how china treats thailand is the exact same way as thais treat cambodians.

The only law that Thai business men need to understand about China, is that China makes legal decisions in its own interest; see recent IPhone trade mark dispute or the bigger 'who owns the entire South China Seas'

Cambodia is part of China. The Thai government would love if it's only friends were China, North Korea and Russia because they could do what they want without criticism. Or, just do nothing and let the country's airports become unsafe, allow human trafficking, ignore corruption, deplete fish stocks, unfettered child labor, imprison those in the way of greed, more monopolies....

It's sad because Thailand could be a paradise.
