Visa Advice Request - Thai Family Man

Featured Replies

Hi,

I know this is kinda lazy but I'm having trouble wading through all the info and I'd appreciate some brief advice (even a link to a similar post would be great).

I'm 32 and live in the UK with my Thai wife and our 2 children. I have a UK passport, my wife has a Thai passport, our kids were born in the UK but have both UK and Thai birth certificates and passports.

We'd like to move over to Thailand next year and I'll need to work while we're there. I'm hoping a western company will move me to a Bangkok office or let me work from home there (I work in IT in the oil and gas industry), but we may need to just pack up and and take our chances when we get there.

I'd like some advice on what's the recommended visa option for my situation, and what the implications are as far as extending it and remaining in work are concerned.

Thanks!

Neil

Sorry but your question seems to ask every question ever asked. Believe you will find reading a few pages here and in the jobs forum will help to fill in the blanks and give you some better idea of the direction you may want to take.

About the only specific advise I can offer is try to obtain a multi entry non immigrant visa (married it is easy) before any travel.

Get the single entry Non Imm O visa from the consulate in Hull.

Provided you can show an income of 40K baht a month you will be able to extend your visa based in the fact you are supporting your Thai wife and children.

If a Thai based company will get a work permit for you that will be even better.

Failing the income or a work permit, get the multi-entry visa from Hull.

This will allow you a 3 month stay, then you do a border hop and come back for another 3 months. If you can do your last border hop just before the validity of the visa expires, you will get almost 15 months out of the visa.

This should give you long enough to see if your decision to live in Thailand is the right one.

Good luck

You should get a one year multi entry visa ( to be on the safe side.... as you may not qualify for the extension of stay based on marriage because of the income issue)

If however your kids are going to be going to school. Get a single non immigrant visa and once you are here in 90 days. You can apply for an extension of stay based on being a dependent of a child going to school. You will need 500K in a bank account for three months (be sure to put these funds in the day you arrive by bank wire)

If your kids cannot go to school as they are not old enough, just get the multi entry visa. It will be flexible and allow you to be able to apply for the work permit.

Be sure to have the kids use their Thai passports when they arrive in Thailand.
