Two Dhammakaya monks face arrest for possessing military barbed wire

Khlong Luang district police have decided to take legal action against two Wat Dhammakaya monks and two lay men for having in their possession military-grade razor-sharp barbed wire which was installed at the temple to prevent officials from the Department of Special Investigation from entering the temple ground a month ago.

Pol Col Khemphat Pothipitak, superintendent of Khlong Luang district police in Pathum Thani, told a press conference on Friday that enquiry officers had issued summonses for the four suspects to acknowledge the charges against them on August 1.

Only two of them, Mr Pichai Laosirimongkol and Mr Wallop Kanhasen, showed up to acknowledge the charges on August 1 but they refused to give any statements to the police.

The two other suspects, Phra Thepyarnmahamunee and Phra Somnoekpiyathammo, are yet to respond to the summonses.

Pol Col Khemphant said that the barbed wire was regarded as military supply and placed under control and it was used to block DSI officials from entering the temple compound.

Another case which is still under investigation concerns the illegal gathering of followers of the temple to obstruct the performance of duty of officials, the colonel said that five suspects had acknowledged the charges of illegal assembly to block officials from doing their job on August 4 but they denied the charges and refused to give any statements to the police.

In this particular case, 19 suspects, including Ms Chirapa Rairod, are wanted by the police.

Block all exits and entrances, cut off water and electricity, and wait at the only gate left open for people to come out so you can slap an arrest warrant on them and escort them towards jail.

The place is more than likely like a fortress with lots of food and water stockpiled.

After all the goings on at this temple, do the police actually believe they will answer the summons.

No - monks think the law only applies to the people who support them, not the monks themselves

they think they are above the law, as has been shown in so many recent incidents.

Wonder if there are secret tunnels to other disguised exits? My guess - yes.

Got to love this summons nonsense,   if someone is held to have broken the law why isn't action taken straight away and I know there are many potential answers.

You think the authorities would have learned by now that monks don't answer summonses,  that's for lesser beings.

obstruction of justice is a serious offence and should be investigated thoroughly.

what is happening to us. we are using house of God for  purposes others than they are designed for.it has happened in other countries with disastrous consequences.

hi scorecard

with technology available these days that can be easily ascertained and may be it should be done to get to the bottom of the matter.

Military-grade razor-sharp barbed wire.
Purchased with donations?

A temple secured like a military fortress.
Very doubtful, whether this is a real Buddhist temple.

hi tomacht8

the important question  whether it is legal to acquire this wire. if so nothing wrong with that.

Military grade barbed wire presumably comes from the military, maybe presented by a supportive General coiled up in a very large orange plastic bucket. The Thai armed forces have a historical problem holding on to their more portable hardware, such as assault rifles, grenades and in this case barbed wire. better check there aren't a couple of Chinese made battle tanks painted orange and hidden inside the compound!

So, are they saying that it's illegal to buy or posess razor wire (it's not barbed wire)? Because I'm in the process of sourcing a chain-link fence to go around my land and I was going to put a coil of it on top.

If it's true, is there anything else the military have claimed exclusive rights to (other than the entire country).

Well, first we must agree on what is just! Plenty of room for debate there, I feel.

... and, I thought there was no "God" in Buddhism.

I seem to have also been wrong about what temples were 'designed for'. Until I came to Thailand I thought they were places to learn the teachings and pay homage to the wisdom of Gautama Buddha, as my experience of temples in the UK taught me; but since I came to Thailand I've discovered that they had it all wrong and temples are actually more like community centres for parties with near-naked dancing girls, huge sound systems with VERY loud music, and lots and lots of lovely alcohol. I also discovered another thing those silly Farrang monks have been getting wrong... it seems that they ARE allowed to have lots of money, vintage cars, sports cars, helicopters, yachts and loose women... they can also eat whatever and whenever they like, do whatever drugs they feel will help their practice of Dhamma, and wash it all down with a nice bottle of whatever they choose. I can't wait to tell the western monks, so they can do it right, just like it's done in a REAL Buddhist country.
