BANGKOK: -- Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday  visited the National Science Museum in Khlong Luang District, Pathumthani Province, to lay the foundation stone for the construction of ‘Rama IX Museum’.

According to National News Bureau of Thailand, the museum project is one of the projects drawn up in celebration of the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King on December 5, 2007.

The Cabinet has approved 1.9 billion baht for the museum to be built on a 42-rai plot of land (about 30,000 square metres) in the same compound of the National Science Museum.

The Rama IX museum will feature His Majesty the King’s working principles and his scientific thinking process in finding solutions to the obstacles to development projects in different parts of the country.

The museum’s theme is thus centered on the portrayal of His Majesty the King as a development monarch and the royal concept of sustainable co-existence.

Once completed in 2019, the Rama IX nuseum will be the first museum in Southeast Asia that offers the most comprehensive information and exhibitions about water resources in the Asia-Pacific region and on the ecological systems in Thailand and the world.

US urges Thai military to return the country to civilian-led government as soon as possible

WASHINGTON: -- The United States yesterday called on the Thai military government to return Thailand to elected, civilian-led government as soon as possible.

The call came one day after the majority of the Thai people voted to accept the Constitution in Sunday’s referendum.

In response to question of whether the US believed  that the approval of the new constitution, including the provisions reserving seats for the military or military-chosen lawmakers, is a good thing for democracy, State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said in a press conference in Washington that the US remained  concerned that the drafting process for the constitution was not inclusive, that open debate was not permitted in the run-up to its adoption.

But as it was the preliminary result, she said “we urge Thai authorities to proceed with next steps to return Thailand to elected, civilian-led government as soon as possible once the results are final.

She went on saying that as part of the process to return Thailand to democracy, she also strongly urged the Thai  government to lift restrictions on civil liberties, including freedom of expression, the right to peaceful assembly, so the Thai people can engage in an open, unimpeded dialogue about the country’s political future.
