My Car's Air Conditioner Ain't Workin'

It's been nearly 3 years since I bought the car... and up 'till now the aircon has been fine... but just in the last few days I've noticed that it isn't cooling any more.

:o

The car sits outside in the sun all my working day... no cover available... so when I leave from work it's pretty warm inside. My office is usually about 28-29 degrees in the afternoon (sun radiating heat thru the glass windows) but the car's a helluva lot hotter.

(searching around for a sweating smilie...)

Apart from the original dealer (who will probably charge an arm and a leg for a service that he'll probably outsource anyway) where in Pattaya can I go to get it serviced? And how much is it likely to cost?

Most likley the gas has leaked out probably from a hose, should not be the condenser. Not expensive to get it gassed up and a new hose fitted. It's not that big a thing.

I seem to remember seeing a car air con place before Lotus going north.

Failing that there has to be some place up near where you work, most car places will have the gas bottle and can do a check on the system. Sorry to be so vague, never had this problem here. Yet !!

Just speaking from a lot of experience with AC problems in my car. The average cost for a re-charge is 300Baht, up from 200 when Freon was still legal. I recently had the metal tube with expansion valve and hoses replaced (actually they custom welded a new one for me) due to a leak for 1000 Baht. If the compressor that can run you from 5000-8000 2nd hand.

If the cooling slowly started getting worse, like mine was, then it will be most likely loss of refrigerant. If you can read Thai just driving around should see big signs in quite a few places for this, at least in Chiangmai there is no shortage of these shops.

JD,

The soundboy place where I had my stadium ghetto blasters installed also do air con.

Might be worth checking out. On the right driving towards Bangkok, past the chicken palace on the other side of Sukhumvit.

As someone said I'm sure there's loads of places around if you get your lady to read the signs.

I think you might be right, Cobber.

Well it is 2 am and I see an empty bottle of white next to me.

What's your excuse? :o

"Boy Sound & Air" it is. The owner is "Mr. Boy" and between him and his wife they provide a great, not expensive, knowledgeable yet completely frenetic service for ICE and air conditioning.

The best in the area...and you can recognise the premises by the huge "Swiss Film" and "Meridium" promotional hoardings positioned right on the top of the building.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

:o

I've just spent the entire morning driving around Rayong and Mapthaput and it was cooler with the windows open than the air from the car.

I'll drop by Boy Sound & Air on the way home tonight.

Anyone know what time they close?

Well, plus a couple of very stiff Sang soms.

Artisan, that's good to know. They did a pretty good job with the Mobi-monster sound system. Now when I go up country, I just open the doors, pump up the volume, and deafen all the villagers for miles around - just like they used to do to me in the days when I tried to sleep up there. :o

I'll give their aircon guys a go one day when the warranty expires.

Hi Jai Dee. Mr. Boy normally closes up around 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

I can confirm it's 7 p.m. - but if they haven't finished a job they keep going. I think I left there about 8.30 one night.

if you don't use it you help to save the earth apparently jd.

But that's a futile bit of advice innit?! :o

No air con in a dark coloured car in Thailand?

Fat chance!!!

Anyway, I dropped in to Boy's place last night on the way home, and 20 minutes plus 300 baht later... icy cold air again.

:D

Thanks for the help everyone.
