BANGKOK: -- Hundreds of prisoners who have served their jailterms for certain periods of time will be freed under an amnesty Royal Decree which was published in the royal Gazette on Monday.

The amnesty decree was intended to commemorate the 70th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne and the 7th cycle birthday anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen.

Under the procedure, prisoners who are to be freed must meet the set requirements laid down by the corrections department. These include good behavior, totally blind, being disabled, suffering from Aids, mental illness or chronic cancer, having served at least three years behind bars, over 60 years old and etc.

Prisoners on rape and drug trafficking charges will not be eligible to the amnesty.

"...prisoners...must meet the set requirements...including...totally blind, being disabled, suffering from Aids, mental illness or chronic cancer, over 60 years old and etc..."!

A hollow gesture that just shifts these problems back onto society!

At least, it should free up some prison space (to cater for those denied amnesties) as "promised" reforms are rolled out.
