Medical Visa Possible without leaving Bangkok

Recommended Posts

I am in Thailand on a extended stay, not visa. To be clear, I came by bus from Cambodia and received a 30 day stay and then went to immigration and paid 1900 baht to extend. I have to leave by Aug 22 as it stands right. now

I found out I have a hernia and I don't want to leave but I do not have enough money for the operation until mid September. I went to the hospital and they gave me a paper saying what the problem was but I made the mistake of not scheduling the surgery because the wanted to know right then and there when. I had to go over my finance at my hotel to figure out.

The Question is if I get the surgery scheduled in mid September with the right paperwork, can I go to immigration to get a 90 day medical visa without having to leave the country. I can not carry anything or I could end up with an emergency situation. I do not want to leave to go to Cambodia or Burma, Laos etc and have a problem.  I can not carry anything or I may end up with an emergency situation with my intestine getting choked in through my hernia. Doctor said it is dangerous.

Can anyone say if I can get a medical visa without leaving the country with the right paperwork from the hospital?

Thank You...

Alternatively, just get a new letter from your doctor, hopefully on hospital letterhead, specifying when you'll have the surgery and adding on some recovery time.

Take this new medical letter to Immigration and you should be able to get the extension.

The only way he would get an extension is if the hospital/Doctor say he can't travel.

Thank you all!    I'm headed back to the hospital but I am at the mercy of the Doctor at this point. The doctor said the hernia was pretty good size.  If I have to leave I will be headed to either Burma or Cambodia, neither of these places are good to be at if you have an emergency.

India is only a 2-hour flight away. Good place to be if you have a medical emergency. So's Malaysia. In fact, just leave now to have the op in either country, India being the least expensive. Sorted.

I never met a Doctor in Thailand who wouldn't want to help you out. They care more about you than your Immigration Status.

I would just tell him what you told us and ask him to state in a company letter head that you are not fit for travel right now and to recommend a 90 day extension. I don't think there is any need to go into detail as Immigration Officials do not hold a Doctoral Degree to become one. They are more interested in the forms being filled out correctly then your medical problems. So get your paper work in order and you shouldn't have a problem.

I agree the doctor will be on your side. Be careful, however, recommending that immigration will not look carefully at the details. People do use fake documentation to apply for medical extensions, and immigration generally look at all such applications very carefully.

Unfortunately my doctor said I could travel and he could not perform the surgery until the end of Oct. I don't agree with him because the hernia is getting bigger everyday and it beginning to hurt. He says I have had it a long time, I disagree, I even know when and where I got it.

I'm screwed and have to leave. So much for all Thai doctors have compassion, NOT.  He would not answer when I said I have to carry things is that ok? No answer!  I have a medical letter but it does not say I can't travel.

Why did you even go to see a doctor, it would seem from your post that you are more than qualified for both diagnosis and prognosis.

As a side note, you are on holiday here? Surely your travel insurance would pay for the operation if it were that urgent?

In reply to why I went to go see a doctor. First of all I've had plenty of experience with doctors since my wife died from cancer and I also have had it. Doctors are not always right and the two other doctors I saw thought it needed to be done quick. The point is a doctor is guessing, thats why they call it a medical practice and I've had my share of doctors being wrong especially when two others disagreed with him.  Price is an issue and the one I could afford is the one that can't do it right away. And maybe, just maybe this doctor said its ok because he wants me to wait. All I know is its getting bigger as I wait and he was wrong about it not getting worse.

I'm not replying to anymore idiotic statements like the one above that doesn't have anything constructive to say!!!

Wrong -"The word’s earliest meaning was, in the OED's definition, ‘to pursue or be engaged in (a particular occupation, profession, skill, or art)’. It is first recorded as such in 1421 and that is the meaning it continues to have when we speak of practising (BrEng spelling) law or medicine. At around the same time, it seems to have been used to mean ‘to exercise oneself in a skill or art in order to acquire or maintain proficiency, especially in music’, but it is not until 1542 that it is recorded as meaning ‘to perform (an activity) or exercise (a skill) repeatedly or regularly in order to acquire, improve or maintain proficiency’. That is the meaning it most commonly has today."

What about your insurance, you failed to answer that point?

You saw 2 other doctors first who said "it needed to be done quick", but you decided to pop off on holiday ?

It is getting bigger? You have the machinery at home to determine this?

No insurance - reap what you sow.
