Accident Samut Songkhram: Elderly Woman Killed Crossing the Road

A 78-year-old woman was fatally struck by a pickup truck while crossing the road to buy groceries, leaving her grieving son heartbroken after previously warning her not to go out alone. The incident occurred on 19 May at around 09:45 on the inbound Samut Songkhram–Bang Phae Road near Soi Ban Prok 49 in Ban Prok subdistrict. Emergency responders from the Sappharachen Foundation and police from Mueang Samut Songkhram Police Station were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found the body of Mrs Laksana 78, lying in the right-hand lane of the road. She had sustained severe injuries including a broken lower right leg, swelling to the right side of her head and laceration above her right eye. Nearby, a green Isuzu pickup truck with front-end damage was parked at the scene. The driver, Mr Pradit 53, remained on-site and cooperated fully with authorities. He told police he was leaving his house to begin his security shift in the town centre when the collision occurred. According to preliminary investigations, Mrs Laksana, originally from Prachinburi province, had been staying with her son. Despite his repeated advice not to venture out alone and offers to do errands for her, she frequently crossed the busy road to visit the nearby convenience store, possibly due to boredom from staying indoors. Police believe her advanced age and limited mobility may have contributed to her being unable to avoid the oncoming vehicle. Her body has been sent to Ratchaburi Hospital’s forensic department for examination. Mr Pradit will be summoned for further questioning, and witnesses in the area will be interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation into the precise cause of the collision. The deeply saddened son told officers, “I always told her, if she wanted anything, just ask me, I would go and get it for her. EU Council President António Costa demanded that Israel halt its military operations, while also calling on Hamas to release all remaining hostages immediately. He emphasized that only a two-state solution could bring lasting peace to the region. Echoing Costa's remarks, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the bloc's position: "We are convinced that the only solution is the two-state solution."
