Tourism Min to open security workshop in Sep to raise tourist safety

BANGKOK, 17 August 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is ready to launch a special workshop next month to develop the abilities of people in various professions to serve as eyes and ears of the nation in a bid to prop up tourist confidence.

Following violent incidents in the southern region, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul asserted that her ministry will be responsible for all medical expenses of tourists who were injured in the attacks. In response to safety concerns, she said relevant agencies have been entrusted with helping restore confidence among foreign tourists.

In this regard, Ms Kobkarn made known that a project called “Ta Sapparod” or “Pineapple Eyes” will commence this September, aiming to train participants on how to detect suspicious individuals or objects and how to assist authorities in maintaining safety in tourist attractions. Each workshop will be open to a maximum of 100 participants, who are expected to come from tourism-related professions, such as receptionists, bellboys, security guards, drivers and tour guides.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Pongpanu Svetarundra confirmed that Thailand is ready to host the World Tourism Day 2016 under the theme “Tourism for All, Promoting Universal Accessibility” from September 26-29 in Bangkok and Khon Kaen, believing the event will lend a significant boost to Thai tourism.

Each person completing the workshop will be awarded a Pineapple Eyes pendant (a Kobkarn award if you will) to be worn as a visible sign of their helping restore confidence among foreign tourists.

Now we also know why it was reported elsewhere that she is talking to the Pokémon game makers in Japan to increase the numbers of rare Pokémons - she wants them to create a Pineapple Eyes Pokémon! Here comes some of her other great ideas:

"When tourists check-in to a hotel they will be given a wristband with a serial number that matches their I.D. and shows the contact details of the resort they are staying in so that if they're out partying late and, for example, get drunk or lost, they can be easily assisted," Kobkarn told Reuters.

"The next step would be some sort of electronic tracking device but this has not yet been discussed in detail."

She added that a "buddy system", pairing tourists with a local minder at tourist destinations, was also being discussed.

How about, they open the workshop to anyone who wants to attend, Thai or foreigner.

No offense to Porn the security guard, but I'd have more faith in someone with critical thinking skills than someone who watches cartoons, fears ghosts, and won't do the right thing if there is the potential to lose face.

Maybe they should be inviting representatives of the police, electrical services, balcony fixes, jet ski hirers and roads authority.

no way you can reach a representative group to cover  the tourism industry.

Seriously, my wife told me some Thai even fly to New York to catch a very rare pokemon there.....

So Thailand pays ALL medical expenses for tourists who got hurt by the bombs? Why is that? Will travelinsurance not cover it because it was a bomb?

Probably not. Insurance companies usually do not pay out when travellers visit a country where the traveller's embassy has issued travel advisories. And, let's face it, insurance companies are generally looking for any opportunity to not pay out.

My homecountry has a negative traveladvice for Thailand, does that mean i am not insured right now? That would be terrible...

It must be rough posting on a Thai forum and understanding nothing about Thailand.  Pineapple eyes is a Thai expression for a person seeing everything.  :wai2:

Thanks Scott...I am forever indebted!

You're welcome.  It is like a Yank going to the UK and being told what "taking the piss" means.  He might feel bloody foolish if he didn't know.   It helps to know the local slang as well as language before making an as of oneself.
