Chaipattana Foundation Sec-Gen urges use of sufficiency economy concept in politics

BANGKOK, 19 August 2015 (NNT) – The Secretary-General of the Chaipattana Foundation has suggested the country to apply the sufficiency economy philosophy to political affairs, including the constitution drafting process, in order to allow for sustainable democracy.

Mr Sumet Tantivejkul, Secretary-General of the Chaipattana Foundation, gave a lecture under the title “Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and Sustainable Democracy” to students of the advanced political and electoral development program of the Election Commission. He pointed out that a country can be deemed truly democratic when its citizens eagerly join hands to maintain national stability under the constitution without breaching other people’s rights or giving in to corruption. He claimed previous charters of Thailand were short-lived as they were written without taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of their predecessors or the social context.

The Secretary-General, therefore, advised every individual in the political sector to adopt His Majesty the King’s sufficiency economy philosophy in their work. Those responsible for drafting the constitution were encouraged to thoroughly consider the country’s situation and to not rely solely on principles.

Mr Sumet also cited His Majesty the King’s royal activities to improve the well-being of his subjects as an act of fostering true democracy in the nation. He explained that once people have a good quality of life and can live happily, they would not be easily persuaded by politicians and would have the power to voice opposition to the government should it lack good governance.

I believe the sufficiency doctrine in political affairs has been applied consistently since 1933 to the present and future with a sustainable military dominance in all political matters with regard to governance of Thailand. Sumet is far behind the times.

" He claimed previous charters of Thailand were short-lived as they were written without taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of their predecessors or the social context. "

Previous charters were short lived because of the army's continual interference, like having coups routinely.

But is this guy claiming that the latest charter is good because he sounds likes he is all for the military mob.

2 points for you mister. democracy is not holding hands. democracy is about free and fair elections, not coups and control. secondly corruption is so ingrained in thailands people and institutions it is virtually impossible to eliminate. wonder how many of the student audience believed this s#it.

I did not see where he said it was either good or no good due to the laws that prevail in Thailand at the moment.

I think he was just stating the obvious than it is up to the students or anyone for that matter to decide if the new constitution meets this criteria.

Sometimes Thailand can be uproariously funny and a constant source of entertainment (generally unintentional).

Other times it is just depressing; the stupidity and delusions appear to have no bounds.

This one of the latter.

Good to see the old "sufficiency economy concept" has been rolled out again and given a run around the block.

Been quite a few months since this pearler of a concept made the news so the timing doesn't come as any surprise.

The government seems to have many of these sorts of soothing motherhood policies tucked away in their handbag for regular release to try to confuse the peasants into making them believe those in charge know what they are doing.

And having finished his lecture on "The Sufficiency Economy" Mr  Sumet Tantivejkul, Secretary-General of the Chaipattana Foundation, slipped his notes into his Gucci briefcase, accepted the profound wais of his hosts, and was escorted to his chauffeur driven Mercedes, which whisked him home to his luxurious mansion (the motorcycle outriders ensuring that the traffic lights were always in his favour), where a chilled bottle of the finest Chablis was waiting in his air conditioned study. Later he would dine at his club, splitting a bottle of Johnny Walker with a few of his friends, Generals, senior civil servants and others of that ilk who had invested wisely, and were keen that this new Thai democracy  should allow them to continue to have sufficient.....
