Hi,

I was recently married in Thailand and I am planning to obtain a Multi entry Non O visa based on marriage.

My question is that on the official Thai Marriage certificate my wifes name is still her normal Thai name (not with my surname). She was asked at the Amphur if she wanted to use my surname which she said yes and was given official documents to take and register at here local "home" Amphur in Chiang Mai. Once she has changed her name, Blue house book and ID card will we need also to get a new Marriage certificate with her new name with my surname added for the sake of the visa? Or will Thai embassies understand the name change if I produce documents with new name and or name change? I know how strict some embassies can be and I dont want to be refused because names on paperwork do not match or is this normal?

Many thanks for any advice.

You did not marry your wife - your married a single woman of a different name.  All marriage certificates will have the maiden name on them - there is no such thing as a new marriage certificate.  She just changes name on her ID/Home register and passport if she wants to use your last name - the marriage certificate showing she is married to you allows that.

The marriage certificate shows you are married to a Thai - and that is what a Thai Consulate is interested in.  And yes they will understand if she signs paperwork and had ID card with your last name.  No problem.

You cannot get a new marriage certificate. I think it may be normal worldwide for a marriage certificate to show the brides maiden name on it.

Was you your wife given a name change doucment at the Amphoe when she did it?

I have only seen one report of person having a problem because of the marriage certificate shows the wife's maiden name and her house book and ID card their married name. They were asked for a name change document but were able to use her old house book showing her maiden name and the change to a new one.

The back of the marriage certificate should have her ID card number on it which should be enough proof it is same person shown on the ID card.

Thank you for your reply.

So when applying for Visa based on marriage all the copies of her new documents will show my surname. These will be accepted at Thai embassies even though technically the name appears differently on the marriage certificate? Or best to get copies of documents required now before name change?  I know to us it seems obvious but like we all know the embassies and obtaining visas can be big obstacles if paperwork is not perfect.

Once again thank you for your time and help.

My wife has had my name since the date we registered or marriage (she had no choice back then). I have applied for and received several non-o visas and have applied for 9 extensions of stay based upon marriage without a problem.

Our marriage certificate and the Kor Ror 2 marriage registry has her maiden name on them. Her ID card and house book has her married name. The only thing that is the same is her Thai ID number.

If you are worried about you could try to get a name change certificate from the Amphoe.

My wife got a nice document from the Amphur that shows the name change.

I always have a copy of that one together with the marriage certificate.

Looks similar to the marriage certificate but with green borders.

  • Yes, a marriage certificate in her maiden name and ID/house book in her married name should be accepted by all Embassies/Conulates when applying for a visa.
  • As advised above you should get a name change document from the Amphoe. It probably won't be needed to apply for a visa, but it's a handy document to have. My wife has needed it a couple of times when dealing with Thai bureaucracy.

Ok thanks for the advice. If I go to Savannakhet for the Visa next week using all the documents required just in her Thai maiden name and Marriage certificate. Will I have problems do you think if I dont have the "name change document"? as the Thai wife was given the option not to have my name.

What are the current documents required for Non O multi entry based on marriage in Savannakhet at present.

Thanks guys..

  • If all the documents have your wife's maiden name you shouldn't have a problem.
  • If your wife's ID and house book have already been changed to her married name then you might, based on one recent report, need the name change document.
