Former ICT minister Surapong faces another malfeasance ruling today

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders will today hand down sentence to former information and communication technology (ICT) minister Surapong Suebwonglee charged with malfeasance for giving approval to an amendment of a telecom  satellite concession that contributed to the Shinawatra family's business.

The former ICT minister in the former Thaksin Shinawatra government and two former senior ICT officials were  accused by the National Anti-Corruption Commission of dereliction of duty and malfeasance for changes in a concession contract, which enabled Shin Corp, then owned by the Shinawatra family, to reduce its shareholding in Shin Satellite from 51 per cent to 40 per cent.

According to the accused, Shin Satellite, now known as Thaicom, sought to reduce its shareholding, citing the need to find strategic partners to help expand its communication-satellite business.

But the NACC judged the entire process as corruption and a violation of the charter’s Article 157, which is intentional dereliction of duty.

Earlier this month, the former ICT minister was sentenced one year in prison and a fine of 20,000 baht in another malfeasance case in 2008.

Fined 20,000 baht, pathetic...no doubt the person although sentenced to one year in prison, was bailed, and then appealed, so didn't spend a single day in jail...:coffee1:

Yeah, compare with the garbage collector fined 133,400 bht for selling 96 recycled cd's for 20 bht a pop and then jailed because he couldn't afford the fine.
