BANGKOK: -- Siam Commercial are the latest bank to assure customers that their ATMs are safe after an eastern European gang hacked into machines belonging to the Government Savings Bank in Bangkok and several southern provinces.

Phongsit Chaichatrapornsuk a senior manager at SCB's criminal investigation department said that the bank had ATMs of international standard, reported Thairath

He said that software for the machines nationwide is state of the art using the latest technology and customers could feel confident about the safety of their systems.

An upgrade was also carried out, he said, and the system is checked 24 hours a day.

The gang that hit 21 ATMs of the GSB or Omsin Bank have escaped abroad.

They stole 12 million baht by introducing malware on electronic cards at ATMs in Surat Thani, Chumporn, Phuket, Prajuab Khirikhan, Petchaburi and Bangkok.

The thefts earlier this month led to the shutdown of the GSB's 3000 plus ATM network.

Yesterday Kasikorn Bank similarly assured customers of the safety of its ATMs.

I don't think the easy access to the networking cables is international standard (mainy have networking equipment dumped loose on top or full access to rear), I suspect thailand is easy prey for high tech crime like this.

The future intention worldwide is to go to NFC (Near Field Communications). That will be safe at first but won't last once the hackers decide how to break it.
