I've just extended my tourist visa at immigration, which gives me until 13 September.  My flight out of Thailand is on 16th.

 

Should I do a border run to get the extra days to see me through to 16th September, or will immigration be OK with a 3 day overstay?

 

I come back to Thailand in October and don't want any problems returning.

You could do a border run OR a couple of days before the 13th you could ago to immigration and apply for another extension. It will be declined because you're only allowed one extension but they will give you 7 days to leave the country (1,900 baht).

 

You will have no problem at the airport with a 3 day overstay. You'll be taken the overstay desk, pay the fine (1,500 baht) and probably have a record of the overstay stamped in your passport. The overstay should have no affect on visas or permission to stay in the future.

 

If you get caught on overstay you can be arrested, prosecuted, fined, detained, deported and banned for 5 years.

Great.  Thanks for the replies.  It's not so much the leaving Thailand but the return, with an overstay stamp, that concerns me..

Historically, 3-day overstays have been a non issue. However, personally, I would avoid them with the changing climate here. As @elvajero posted, you can get 7 days to leave the country and avoid an overstay that (while not a big deal now) might be used against you in future.

Not probably, definitely.

You can be arrested and taken to Immigration, so I would stay legal!

No, it's not really an extension, but not an overstay either.  Your extension request (costing 1900B)  is declined and they give you 7 days to leave the country.  Up to you, but if I couldn't move my flight up, I'd rather bite the bullet on the add'l visit to Immigration and the 1900B, than knowingly overstay, even by just 3 days.  Theoretically, as someone else pointed out, if you let it lapse into the 3-day overstay, and just happen to get picked up for something during that time, the consequences might not be so pleasant.  And even assuming no such encounters, I'd rather not have any overstay stamps on my record at all.

There have been a few reports from people claiming they didn't get the overstay stamp for short overstays, which is why I said 'probably', as in almost certainly. IMO just one person not getting the stamp makes it not definite.

I have known people not getting the stamp for a one-day overstay, but never heard of no stamp once a fine is assessed. If it ever happened, then I would suspect the IO is pocketing the fine.

Did you get an overstay stamp in your passport and/or a receipt for the fine paid.

Just a regular stamp out, no overstay and they gave me a receipt No attitude at all about the overstay. Much more enjoyable experience than any I've had with the immigration folks in the US

Well now you have a credible first hand report by @Rob13 of someone with a two day overstay, fined and no stamp. I doubt no stamp means the IO pocketed the fine. No receipt maybe.

He didn't keep it. Too many people and too much paperwork involved. 

Stay 100% clean whenever possible. One day it may haunt you. Get the 7-day extension an earlier poster recommended. They are cracking down and we don't yet know how all the dust is going to settle.

The OP wrote that he was leaving Thailand on 16 September. We don't know how he fared.
