uk nhs regs

A bit of a long shot, but here goes:

I am a UK citizen who is registered with the NHS in Hertfordshire; and receiving out patient care ( once or twice a year) at Watford General Hospital for Lymphoma.

This has been going on for 4 years.

I live in Thailand, but have access to a Watford address, and am registered with a G.P. in Watford.

My access to a Watford address ceased this month, my next appointment with the Hematologist at Watford G. H. is early next year.

I have heard (non nhs source)  that I can maintain my current health care regime in Watford; even if I inform the nhs that I no longer live in Herts.

I make my appointments directly with the consultant Hematologist, who always sends a written report post appointment to my G.P; and posts a copy to me at my "Watford address".

My concern is with respect to what may happen after I see him next year if I say nothing about not living in Watford anymore. His letter to me may be returned, with indications that I no longer live there.

So, can I inform everyone involved that I no longer live in Herts; but still be eligible under current nhs regs to elect to keep receiving out patient care at The Department of Hematology at Watford General Hospital ??

To my understanding no, you cannot as UK expats living abroad are not eligible for the NHS.  Arranging to have mail forwarded may be wise.

However I am moving this to the "Home Country" forum for better responses from other UK expats.

You have become not UK resident, you are no longer entitled to free NHS care. Join the large number of others who chose to leave the UK and are no longer eligible for that care either, you can't have your cake and eat it also!

correct, for a small fee the post office will re-direct your mail

His said he will not have an address,  will the PO still do it if he has no further connection there.

Yes they will.  This facility is normally used by people who move house and need to continue receiving mail sent to the old address.

The only negatives are the cost (it's expensive) and that registered mail and similar won't be redirected to outside the UK.

At the end of the day, the NHS hospital has no reason to think you're a foreigner - unless you are unable to provide a current GP?

Even then, they will treat you - but there is a chance they may send you an invoice?

Thanks for the comments; I knew it was a long shot.

I'm not going to say anymore about this; it took me a LONG TIME to set up my current situation.

White lies have been spoken and regulations by-passed.

There is no fate worse than death; my next moves are pretty well dictated anyway.

By the way, The Royal Mai will no longer re-direct mail from a hospital;

I wonder why..........................

I note I failed to mention that even though my access to the Watford address is over; I will now have access to an address in Cheshire. So my question was really:

"can I still have treatment with my existing Hematologist in Watford, even if I 'live' in Cheshire"

I know full well already the UK NHS will not offer free health care to "Non UK Resident Citizens"

The memory of being told to effectively "<deleted> off and die, or pay loads and loads of money" will never fade.

Just a suggestion the don't know costs but may well be worth an enquiry,  it's a possibility that the air-flight costs may off set the treatment costs.

Best of luck anyway.

6 years ago I did over 100,000 BT at the Bumrumgrad Hosp in Bangkok for initial diagnosis. General aesthetic, surgery etc etc. Then about the same amount at Bangkok Hosp Korat for chemo and yet another knock out and cut. The only drug that was going to stop the rot was going to cost me about 100,000 BT a hit here, and I needed 6 in a row over a 5 month period.

Hence the fall back on the NHS. I feel no guilt over my lies etc to them. 35 years of paying tax etc gives me at least equal rights as any random newly settled immigrant in my book.

My statement stands and you haven't contradicted it, "you are no longer entitled".
