I'd like to get Myfi in Thailand, but all I can find on line is rentals at over 8,000 baht/ month.

Can someone please explain how I can get Myfi at a reasonable rate in plain English please. All the sites I looked at on the internet are using jargon that I can not understand.

Thank you for helpful replies.

Have you actually been to any of the main service providers to talk about packages?

That would be my first stop. They normally have shops in the big malls.

I certainly would not do that. That would be the worst way to obtain data.

Bully for you.

No...better for the OP.  Much better data packages available independently. Certainly can buy the unit from the main service providers, but avoid getting locked into any packages.

I advise for the betterment of all members. You'll have to deal with your hurt feelings.

If there are much better packages available, why don't you recommend one?

Even if he finds a cheap dongle or device, he's still got to get service from somewhere.

I've already written to the OP via PM and when I know more about his likely usage and location, I'll recommend the the best package known to myself.

Nevertheless, I'm sure that he'll thank you for your concern.

As to better packages, i already wrote to you via PM with some ideas some time ago. So you also know that I know about the best packages and know that it is better to put together custom packages. than to purchase a stock package.

I also have no idea as to why you would expect me to recommend a package without any knowledge of the likely usage pattern and location.

It really does seem that you are posting from a position of sour grapes. It does you no favours.

What is a custom package ? A variation on a data plan from an ISP or Telco ?

Using add ons to create a package more suitable for your needs than a stock package. There are many examples in earlier threads.

It requires a bit of fannying around but it can save you money.

However, what I don't understand is that JJ seems reluctant to post this kind of information on the forum.

Seems rather odd to me.

Thaibeachlovers, what you're being asked in simple terms is:

Do you need the highest speed available? 4G/LTE is the fastest currently but is not available everywhere.

3G is cheaper, but still adequate for most things.

Are you wanting to stream or download movies or just surfing and sending emails?

Packages normally have two factors to consider (other than price):

Speed and Download allocation.

E.g. if you want to download movies but aren't worried about the speed, 3G will do.

But a watchable copy of a two hour movie is around 1Gigabyte of data, and you usually have a Download allocation of a limited number of gigabytes you can download before they throttle you or charge you extra.

Don't be fooled by providers telling you it is "unlimited", there is almost always some small print.

Go to an AIS shop and ask them about their postpaid packages and then get a price.

Then bring it here and JJ will tell you how you can do it cheaper using USSD codes.

What I choose to post on the open forum, is up to me...and certainly nothing to do with you. That's why they are called Private Messages. If they are not to you, then they are none of your business.  So no need for you to comment on it.

As to "fannying about"...that is complete nonsense. It takes exactly the same amount of steps to apply a stock package as it does to apply a custom package. It just depends on your actual needs.

If you want 90 GB  of data per month, there is no matching stock package, so of course one would need to apply a custom method.  Nothing to do with money and more to do with applying what is necessary.

So please, less of the silly comments.

Simply not true is it?

I don't have to enter any codes to top up my data package, it is automatic even though I am on prepaid.

Your solution was a bit cheaper but required sending three USSD codes.

It does not take "exactly the same steps".

Anyway, if you're helping him pick the right package and he can follow you, fair play.

That wasn't a 'solution' I sent to you. It was an example of how to obtain better value. There are many more options and you are not privy to them. I pick and choose as to with whom I share. That's my prerogative. There are options where no USSD codes are needed or just a single USSD code is needed. There are many different combinations. The best I have not ever seen posted elsewhere.

If having to click on a button twice in order to select a suitable package is "fannying about" to you, goodness knows how you are able to cope with the real issues in your life.

May I suggest that this as a more suitable forum for you? ;)

Your links certainly involve quite a bit of "fannying about". How ironic.

I do DTaC 1.5GB + free Facebook for 30 days @ 199bht +VAT

*104*853#9 send.

Then I use my phone as a wifi hotspot for my tablet.

Just for info, most of the best packages are not available using that pathway and as you can imagine, will take quite a few clicks to get anywhere at all.

That's why it better to understand the needs of the user before making a recommendation.

May look further into DTAC packages on my next visit to Thailand, as I have a long history with them....at least to check the speed on offer.  It's just that the AIS packages have fitted my needs of late when it comes to data volume and price.

You know I meant that your links will take a lot of "fannying about". Dialing through to *777, searching for package, registering etc.... and even then you won't have access to most of the data packages.

There are much easier ways of doing it.

Notwithstanding, nice to see that you're not taking it all too seriously. ;)

Out of curiosity, I have a friend who is planning to move from a Bangkok apartment he really likes just because it has no internet access, no phone line.  He needs the internet for his profession and was using a neighborhood internet shop but that will soon be closing.

He needs a fair amount of bandwidth but 3G would probably suffice.  Would a Mi-Fi setup using custom data packages like those mentioned by J-J be an option?  What equipment would he need to personally buy?  About how expensive? He is pretty savvy technically so set-up should be doable for him.

If he has a decent 3G signal he should be able to run a speedtest on his mobile.

If that's then sufficient, he could even use his phone as a Mobile Hotspot and just get the right data package.

Or if he wants something else, he can get one of the many dongles or mifi devices available on the market.

He simply needs to be aware that not every device supports every frequency, so it's better to get one with a package from the phone company (depending on the package, they might even throw the device in free).

Of course JJ will be along in a minute to tell you different, but that's my advice if you just want no brainer Internet service over 3G.

Wondering why you felt the need to defer to me ;)

Of course a bad idea to get a postpaid package with a MiFi "thrown in for free". I have no idea as to why he persists with this line. There is no such thing as free in that case. You'll be paying for it in one way or another.

Perhaps he is one of those who believes that a 'free' phone in a mobile telephone contract is really free.

Of course I would recommend a dedicated MiFi, rather than using  a mobile phone for Internet access for the purposes of business. Since one would likely want it to be 'always on' and they could need to utilise the phone for other purpose, tethering would likely be interrupted.

The large networks with perhaps the exception of DTAC may sell a 3G MiFi for around 1500 baht, though they might be locked for use with that particular network. 4G perhaps 3000 baht. I bring my own so not sure of the current cost in the shops. The links I posted earlier show unlocked models from around 1300 baht.

Contrary to what Chicog states ;) , they all transmit 3G at 2100 GHz, so the model of MiFi for when it comes to 3G doesn't matter as much as it did before.

I always feel it's better to utilise your brain.  'No brainer' solutions are often for people who have more money than sense.
