Farangs In Thailand

To all Farangs who keep complaining and wishing Thais would be more like the people in their own countries, be careful, you may just get what you wish for.

Good summing up.

It's the same if you go to a forum which is mainly used by Westerners living in Japan, many of the posts are aimed at putting the Japanese down.

That's forum life............. :D

In some human nature, there exist the need to put people down as a way to deal with loneliness, homesickness, bitterness...

Like... one must put others down to feel good about themselves...? :o:D

Thais can buy land in the United States, Americans can't buy land here.

Thais get into national parks in the United States for the exact same price and Americans. In fact, if someone was to charge a Thai any different from what they charged an American, that person would be in trouble with the law.

Whenever and wherever I go in Thailand, I'm called a foreigner. I find this offensive. If everyone in the US called every Thai that they see a foreigner, they'll be called racist.

The United States give a lot of money to Thailand. What does Thailand do for the United States?

The list goes on and on. This, as you see, is not a case of individuals, but of a nation.

I love Thailand, but that doesn't mean that I have to accept some of the cultural shortcomings... that is, if I actually have freedom of speech here. Do I?

your very use of the term "cultural shortcomings" is an indication of your perceved cultural superiority. I am with the OP 100%. posters on this board are often very harsh on Thailand and her people.

To stereotype an entire nation by judging the acts of a few people is a sign of ignorance.

Exactly..................................... you will note that on many threads in this Forum and other Thai related Forums, all Thais appear to be judged by the actions of a few.

Farangs are truley ignorant in that way, thanks for pointing it out so well.

Now that's the funniest, most concise, self-contradictory post I've seen in a while!

Judging by many comments on this Forum and all other Thai related Forums, Farangs appear to think they are somewhat superior to Thai people.

Many seem to want Thailand to become more westernised, more like the country they once lived in, before they fled that very same country and moved to Thailand. Of course, there are certain things they would want to keep just as they are, like the cost of living etc.

And Farangs in Thailand are the minority and feel that everything is against them, it's a typical minority attitude. If a Farang gets stopped by the Police in Thailand, the Farang will complain, " I only got stopped because I'm a Farang, the fact that 300 Thai motorists were also stopped escapes his attention.

I don't want a long post, so I will sum up.......

In the UK there have been acts of violence against Asians ever since Asians came to the UK, for no other reason than they are Asian ( remember Paki bashing ? ). luckily in Thailand this is not the case against Farangs , yet!

The West Indians never suffered the same physical attacks because they are somewhat bigger and intimidate the white man, so the Asians who just wanted to keep themselves to themselves ended up bearing the brunt of these racial attacks, they were seen as an easy target.

Luckily for Farangs, Thai people don't have that attitude.

To all Farangs who keep complaining and wishing Thais would be more like the people in their own countries, be careful, you may just get what you wish for.

:o

My wife lived in Scotland for 3 years and never had any sort of abuse. I've never read on this forum about any Thai people suffering abuse in a Western country :D

The whole 'Thai vs. Farang' discussion is rather myopic, always has been, and won't lead anywhere.

I am of course aware that many laws here are not the fairest regarding foreigners. Nevertheless, this has to be seen in context, as many laws, or how they are implemented/circumvented/abused are not exactly fair towards the majority of the Thai population either.

So, yes, whining farang should open their eyes and recognise that hey do not live in a developed country, but a developing country with enormous problems on all levels.

Should we accept this situation because "we are only guests here", or even be happy that we can because of our often superior financial situation take advantage of the injustices in Thailand?

I would say a clear no to both questions.

I do hope that the injustices, the gap between rich and poor, corruption and abuse of power by the ones who can do so will decrease over time. The injustices against us farang are just a small part of a wide reaching issue here in Thailand.

If a more functioning legal system, equal opportunities, proper democracy, national health for all, accountability and similar issues equal "more like the west", than i am all for it. But i view this as universal human rights transcending racialist feelings of 'Thai vs. Farang'.

I think that minorities living in countries can add a lot to a country - look at the US as a prime example.

I am very glad to see althougth rarely that there indeed are farangs who are capable of making good observations of their ownselves, who are not as self-centered as the typical farangs, who are really capable of understanding what is going on in the minds of the thais.(having read some of the OP's posts)

Most farangs do give me an impression that they feel superior.(sorry, just what I feel. I could be wrong.) They have an attitude. They always look serious. They are easy to complain. Their existance makes me nervous.(fearing that they are going to complain about what you did at any moment) Very fuzzy. I hope having said that does not cause any offense. There are also many good things about farangs! I actually wish them to be a more adorable bunch. I want them good.

Typical farang self-centered superior mentality post. And if you cannot even understand the simple concept of "farang does not equal to foreigner", what more can I expect from you with the understanding of thai culture?

You are comparing things here like a primary kid calculating arithmetics.

I hope your mind broadens as you age.

From those ridiculous observations, I'd guess the OP lives in Pattaya or another tourist spot.

It's quite clear who has the racist view.

I'm curious to the OP's age?

Try hanging out with real normal Thai people and farang, instead of whores and whoremongers.

Ridiculous observations, what ridiculous observations, they are very real observations.

The OP is reffering to the general attitudes shown by Farangs in internet forums.

What on earth would the OP's age have to do with Farangs general attitudes in forums?

How would the company he keeps change the attitudes of Farangs in internet forums ?

Enlighten me .... :o

I am not surprised at all by Neeranam's response. First, he is a troll sometimes. Second, most farangs seem not to even realize that they do show superiority towards other races. Maybe they are just raised that way and meant nothing. Maybe not?

I fully agree with that.

Should minorities come to a country and not question anything? Or should they just be grateful they get to stay in a particular place?

If you ask me, than i think the more they question, the better. But that means also that a certain adaption process has to happen as well. Just sitting in a cocoon and shouting out is not questioning, it is whining.

Every race or culture seems to think that they are better than other cultures. Some farangs may think they are better than Thais just as many Thais think they are better than farangs.

It is part of the human condition i guess.

I would say wrong. From my observation, let's be realistic, farangs know they are leading the world in many ways, so as a result they do in fact think of themselves as a better race. It is in their minds which countries are the dominant ones.(You guys won't admit?)

As for thais or some other asians, they know their own countries aren't as good as some farang countries in some ways. BUT they still love their own countries. They may say with their mouths how superior their nation is but deep inside they know the score. Whilst farangs genuinely believe themselves are more superior.

IMHO Thailand has got it right.

They limit the number of immigrants, western and otherwise.

See the recent tightening of immigration policies and the extreme difficulties in getting PR in Thailand.

That way there is little danger of any group becoming too large and affecting the society,

in the way that the Asians, particularly Pakistanis in the north, are starting to do in the UK.

As an expat in Asia for over 20 years now, my fear is that the problems and resulting repercussions in the UK

will make it difficult for me to continue living in Asia. :o

PS I know they are locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Thailand has already been overrun by the Chinese who came in during the early part of the last century. :D

I don't think you can say that as it is as much a generalisation as anything else said here.

Meemiathai, there is no 'farang' race and saying that Caucasians, I presume you are referrring to them, feel dominant then you should extrapolate that to include Japanese over Chinese, Koreans over Chinese, Chinese over everyone and Thais and anyone darker . . . yaddah, yaddah, yaddah.

you are intelligent enough, but the chip on your shoulder seems to be growing - don't let the chip rule your train of thought as it is letting you down.

Having pride in one's country is one thing, but what you are describing is something different alltogether.

Errr... they wouldn't be my banners that's for sure and such a post shows how generalistic you are being about Farangs.

If it was me, I would be out there demanding 'equality' for all in Thailand.

- Thai's should be allowed to earn the 'same pay' as their foreign counter parts

- Allow equally qualified foreigners to apply for local jobs without active discrimination

- Stop active discrimination on skin colour, race or creed

- Be Fair in the treatment of all - i.e. if a Thai can own land in the UK then be recipricol with it

- One price for all and one rule for all - Be like the three muskateers

While we are at it... No Nukes! No Nukes! No Nukes!

Owning a 4WD will also attract many a strange comment from Neeranam too. :o

Any Farang from the major western countries can enter Thailand visa free. A UK citizen can get 30 days on arrival in Thailand, no checks are made to financial status or background.

The UK does not really recipricate in the same Fashion regarding Thai people.

I for one agree with the Land laws. Thailand must protect its land against foriegners coming in and buying up the country leaving the native Thai people unable to afford to buy the land of their own country.

If I was in charge of Policy in Thailand, I would keep the land ownership laws as they are.

After all, it doesn't stop Farangs coming to Thailand and buying houses does it, it's just not in their name!!!

Win win situation for Thailand. :o

And still the Farangs come............:D:)

And many Farangs think Thai people are stupid..............hahaha.....................

Funny how these things always end up in a slanging match, doesn't it tell you something about the bigger picture, that human nature is competetive, there will always be someone who wants to prove he is better than another.

You're all reasonable guys, I've seen you all put posts with balanced opinions, but you've lost it over Maigo's rhetoric. His opinion is emotional rather than factual.

Tolley had the right idea.

Judging by many comments on this Forum and all other Thai related Forums, Farangs appear to think they are somewhat superior to Thai people.

Thank you for sharing your own ridiculous prejudices with us.

One only has to browse through the many threads on Thailand related Forums to come to the same conclusion as I have.

In what way is it ridiculous, are you telling me that many Farangs do not come across with a superiority attitude in many threads and posts? :D

I beg to differ.....

How many posts do you see slating Thailand and Thai people, Thai government etc, how hard done by the poor farang is............ :D

But still, they come....and still they buy houses not in their names, and still they complain even though they knew it would never be in their name, they buy, then complain. lol :D

I bought a house too. :o
