Social Development Min moves to take homeless off streets

BANGKOK, 8 September 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security is providing assistance to homeless people at Bang Sue Train Station, offering them rehabilitation and vocational training.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew chaired a meeting to search for solutions to the problem of vagabonds who have been living around Bang Sue Train Station. Based on a survey, there were 50 such individuals in the area, including the unemployed, ex-convicts, the mentally ill and alcoholics.

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, therefore, has joined hands with related agencies in forming a team of doctors, psychiatrists and social workers to assist the group in terms of medical treatment, social welfare, contacting relatives and rehabilitation and job skill training.

Initially, the homeless were allowed to take a shower and change into new clothes at Bang Sue Train Station while counseling was also provided. Those who were seriously ill were sent to hospitals for treatment.
